Rocky Patel ventage 1999 Robusto Review

Typically I do not publish my bad cigar reviews, only the reviews of the good and great cigars. I still write them down and I still keep them in my journal but I don’t want to have to bbq a vendor or put someone off something they might enjoy. Today I’m making an exception however.

Previously I’d tried the Rocky Patel Vintage 1999 because I am a huge fan of the other Vintage series. I found it to be not very good but the RP rep said I should try a second one and handed me a new one a week ago. This stick has a nice Connecticut shade wrapper and plain white bands almost making it resemble a Davidoff and it has solid construction giving slightly under each squeeze. It really is a beautiful stick. The prelight smell is pleasant and the draw easy and slightly sweet. It takes to flame like fish to water. That’s where the platitudes end sadly.

The stick has a long flavor profile that has very slight spice and some sweetness and ends with what seems to be a shot of floor wax. Now granted I’ve never had floor wax. But in my imagination that is what the stick tastes like. I imagine that if you had a bottle of floor wax sitting on your living room floor and your dog knocked the bottle over and drunk it he’d get sick. He’d get so sick he’d go swim in the ocean and possibly be eaten by a shark. Then the shark would get sick and crap him out near an oil refinery which due to the toxicity of the crap would catch fire. THAT furniture wax infested shark crapped out dog roasted in crude oil flavor is probably closer to what the finish of this stick felt like to me. It may well be the worst thing I’ve ever had in my mouth and since I’m old enough to have had to drink cod liver oil that is a powerful statement.

Appearance – 9
Construction – 10
Flavor – 1
Value – 3
Overall Experience -3
Overall Grade – 5.2

Final Verdict – A must avoid, if offered one fake a smoking injury then RUN away. I would gnaw off my own leg to avoid this stick.

Umm well, good review.

I have to agree that this cigar really fell below the RP standard. I won't bother talking with the rep as I do not want to try another one. Very suck-ass of a cigar.

Let's torch a '90 or '92 and fell better.

Er, I was going to inquire as to if you think you might have gotten a "bad" one, but after a most vivid description of what was going through your mind and palette at the finish, I believe I'm finished here.

As a certified Patelian, I do agree that this is just about the only Rocky I don't like. While I didn't have the same flavor experience as you, it was probably due to the fact that I really didn't finish it, as I thought it was way too mild (Edge is more my style).

Agree with the previous poster. Fire up a '90 or '92 and forget.

I totally didn't finish it. I did about 1/2 the first one and 1/3 the second one. And I could also fire up an OWR or a Sungrown.

Re: Rocky Patel ventage 1999 Robusto

Thanks for the review. I felt the opposite of this cigar; thought it was like the RP Connecticut but far more complex. I tried a robusto size that I purchased from Iwan Ries earlier this year.

Hopefully this was just a bad coincidence; maybe give it another shot sometime?

I'm going to have to give this cigar another shot and hopefully I don't have the "floor waxing" experience!
