Thumbs up Saint Luis Rey Reserva Especial Belicoso Review

Saint Luis Rey Reserva Especial Belicoso

Made in Honduras
Length 6.12
Ring: 52
Wrapper: Nicaraguan Binder: Nicaraguan Filler: Hon/Nic/Peruvian
Strength: Full
Aged: 7 mos
Price Paid: $2.85

This is a cigar that gets no respect; it is seldom talked about, very little marketing, and often pushed to the back or put in a side humidor in most shops. Yet they are a very well constructed and decent smoke.

This cigar has a dignified appearance with a fairly smooth wrapper and distinguished wrapper. It looks like a cigar that costs many dollars more.

Pre-light draw was easy and there was an immediate sense this was going to be a full bodied smoke. The burn was even and remained that way the full smoke. Nice ash, with a good draw throughout.

The Taste: Pepper and spice with some bold coffee taste after the first two inches. The finish was smooth but nothing special.

Overall: This is a full-bodied cigar I like in both the Robusto and Bellicoso shapes, and will smoke one about every third rotation. It is a smooth bold cigar, but just doesn’t deliver enough to make it into the great cigar category. At the under $4.00 price though it is definitely a value buy for the quality and taste it does deliver.

Excellent review Mike. I concur with Klugs. There is room in the humi for a few of these.

Great review. The construction is solid and I am a big fan of the choco/cocoa coffee flavors. First one I tried was a Belicosos, then I bought a box of Churchills. A few of the Churchills have been plugged but who can complain with the price being what it is. I think I'll get the beli next.

Re: Saint Luis Rey Reserva Especial Belicoso

Nice review, thanks. At the behest of my local tobacconist, the SLR Maduro Rothchilde was one of the first bundles of cigars in my humidor. He said it would be a good cigar, much better after 4 months, and something I could give my sometimes-smoker friends. Smoked five so far and enjoyed four (one was plugged). The ash isn't much to look at, but it does hang on. Good volume of smoke and a nice taste. I like them enough that they've entered my rotation, too.

Re: Saint Luis Rey Reserva Especial Belicoso

I got a box of the natural rothchilds this week. A two dollar cigar that looks and tastes like a six dollar cigar. I may add a box of maduros to my coolerdor.

TS, these come in bundles? I've only found them in boxes of 50.

Poor terminology on my part, it was a box. However, I'm pretty sure that it was a 25 count box.

Re: Saint Luis Rey Reserva Especial Belicoso

I agree the SLR is one great stick. It is hard to find a better maduro than the boxed pressed no matter the price. The fact you can find them for around $3 makes this a steal.

Re: Saint Luis Rey Reserva Especial Belicoso

Does anyone have an opinion on whether this cigar tastes better with a maduro versus natural wrapper? Generally speaking, I prefer natural wrappers with most blends, though I think certain HON and DC blends work well with a maduro wrapper. Some reviews on the SLR reserva point out that the maduro wrapper compliments the blend best. Other reviews talk about how good the naturals taste with only a few months of age. Don't know if my local cigar store carries the SLR reserva, but I will find out today and will sample/review both if possible.

Re: Saint Luis Rey Reserva Especial Belicoso

No SLR reservas could be found at my local cigar shop. Maybe I will locate an online vendor selling singles. I enjoy the La Gloria Cubana Series R, and I read the SLR reserva has a similar taste.

Mike I remembered this review when choosing a smoke to drive to Best Buy today. Apologies to whoever sent this to me (TXMatt?). Record keeping has gotten better since.

I liked this smoke. Very nice looking. Little loose on the fill but not overly so. Nice honest straightforward flavor. Reminded me of a fuente flavor profile during the first half. Second half a torano. Burned great, nice white ash. My call is more towards medium but with a rich tobacco flavor. Nice stick.
