This is a discussion on Maintaining Clay Pipes within the The Pipe Hobby How-To Discussion Forum forums, part of the Pipe Smokers Forums category; With a recent tobacco order I threw in an inexpensive clay pipe just for fun:
Do I care ...
Good question. I just ordered two clay pipes myself. Because, 1) I love me some pipes and 2) I love the historic aspect of clay pipes. pipeshoppe dot com has a care pdf you can download on the FAQ's page. I'm to new here to post the link. I'm not promoting that particular website or company. It's just where I found a lot of cool clay pipes for sale. Mine are supposed to be here in two days.
By the way that pipe's a beauty. Where did you pick it up? How long is it?
Thanks. What is the "red" part? Is it wax or a glaze? Do you find the bowl gets hot when you smoke it?
It is glazed. The bowl doesn't get too terribly hot, but you'll notice that there is a small protrusion coming from the underside. When it does begin to warm up you can hold it there. With the length of the stem it is impossible to burn your tongue however.
