Tobacco Barn "Grandfather"

A friend of mine gave me about an oz of this stuff. It is a chestnut colored cube cut burley. I really like it. The problem is the called about getting some more from Tobacco Barn .. and they want $49 an lb. For Burley? I just don't know that I can buy it on principle. It is hard to fork out a 50 spot for Burley when I only pay $28-35 for an lb of Peter Stokkebye Balkin, etc. (which requires tobaccos that are more expensive).

There is a review on it at tobaccoreview.com

Anyway, I suppose I will pony up and pay it .. but it would be nice if I could identify a bulk blend from an online source ... or even a drugstore match. If anyone has suggestions I could try .. I'd be obliged.

You might want to give a look to 4noggins and John Patton's Gold Nugget Mixture at 32.99/pound. Here's the link: John Patton's Bulk GOLD NUGGET MIXTURE

Why do I make the suggestion? Because John Patton reviewed Grandfather like this on TR.com:
Grandfather is actually cube cut, not course. I've been smoking primarily burley for 49 years, and Grandfather is very special indeed. It starts with good quality burley, and from what I have been told, has a fair amount of deer tongue added. What results is a smooth, mellow, and very flavorful blend, with a vanilla-like undertone. The room note must be amazing, since an anti-smoking friend of mine has asked that I most nothing other than Grandfather when he's around. Carter Hall has been my regular blend from the start, but I could easily make Grandfather my one and only blend.

And his blend at 4noggins is described thus:
A combination of 5 Cube Cut Burleys and Deer Tongue, which gives this the slightest hint of Vanilla . Best packed using the gravity fill method.

Sure, I'm guessing...but I'm guessing that Grandfather may have been an influence on that Gold Nugget Mixture. And the price is right.

Peter S. also makes a pleasant enough cube cut Burley, but I suspect you might find it too mild of flavor. I like it, but I tend to use it for blending.

Thanks for the input. Interestingly, I ordered and recieved 5 lbs of PS cube cut. It is delicious .. but you are right .. not as full as Grandfather. I also got some "Crooner" by C&D. Again, a closer match .. but not as full. I am going to pick up some of the cube cut you suggested. I guess the problem is .. I have a hard time just buying small samples. Right now I have over 146 lbs of tobacco ... (I've only been smoking a pipe for about a month... I also have over 80 pipes already... yup, I'm nuts).

Anyway, I will order some of 4noggins cube. What the heck ... might as well add another few lbs.

Affordable Pipes has a Blue Grass Meoldy, I believe Tobacco Reviews rates it at four starts. It is VERY good and cheaper.

Ya know, I haven't really explored too many "drugstore" blends. So in my pursuit of the "Grandfather" codger taste I thought I should maybe try some of the original "codger" bacca. What I found is that SWR is an extremely close match to Tobacco Barn Grandfather. It not only tastes and smells similar, it looks EXACTLY the same. I might see a slight, very minute amount of black in Grandfather .. that is less apparent in SWR. Anyway, it would be great of some of you could make this comparison as well. I've read that SWR has changed slightly over the years. The thing is, unless Tobacco barn is pressing and casing its own tobacco (highly doubt), the formula to thier blend cannot be that obscure. Wouldn't it be ironic if they were buying a SWR match blend from some maker, maybe blending a bit of black toasted ... or oriental? I say this because the variations all exist in the "nuggets" intact. So what if they are buying a generic blend .. slapping their own sticker on it ... double the price .. and call it Grandfather.

One final thought: I do not think there is any deer tongue in Grandfather. I had thought there might be .. and I know others got that impression as well, but I have some deer tongue .. and I've smoked it in different blends .. added it to others ... and even smoked it plain (in order to get the taste better). While I can understand the flavor in Grandfather that might be mistaken for deer tongue, I really do not believe there is any deer tongue in that blend. If I am wrong, then it is put in before pressing/casing, because you would otherwise likely see it. I might put some under a microscope just to confirm a few things ... I'll get back to ya.
