CV,
any experience with classical guitar? I've been looking for some good tab sites, since I've only had a semester's worth of training.

RE: What Kind of Work You In?

I am the Creative Director for a Marketing Communications company (AKA: Advertising Agency) in Winnipeg, Canada.

The best part of the job is when I go "brain-storming" with the company's Art Director. It's amazing how a good cigar always gets the creative juices flowing.

Oh, Oh... I'm getting writer's block. Think I better go have another brain-storming session now.

So goes the way of the Cigar.

Is it true that nicotene gets the synapses firing? They say that when people quit cigarettes they have to battle concentration problems for some time thereafter. Stephen King said that he had some difficulty writing when he first quit. —J.J.

You could be right about the nicotine, but I definately don't inhale. Can't stand cigaretes.

I think all my talk about "brainstorming" is really just an excuse to have a cigar. Also, one of the great things about smoking a cigar is that it sometimes appears (not to my wife who knows me better) to others that you are deep in thought.

If they only knew.

So goes the way of the cigar.

Hey neighbour!

So you're a Folk Fest junkie as well. How many years have you been going? Definately, we should try to link up, but I'm not yet sure what day(s) I'll be able to attend.

I missed last year's festival and, needless to say, I was completely bummed! Won't make the same mistake twice.

RE: What Kind of Work You In?

JJ,
Nicotine does, in fact, get the synapses firing, as you say. Nicotine is a powerful stimulant and appetite suppressant. The psychological effects of this are intense-- you have someone who doesn't want to eat, and whose mind is ready for action. It creates a decent learning paradigm, as long as the person ingests enough glucose (glucose is what keeps the brain running effectively).
Smoking by inhalation is the fastest way to get the nicotine to the brain. It takes 7 - 10 seconds for nicotine to get from the cigarette to the lungs, to the heart, back to the lungs, then to the brain. We non-inhaling cigar smokers feel the effects of our puros through the mucosal route-- i.e. absorption of nicotine by our mouth and lips. Mucosal ingestion of nicotine takes approximately 3-5 minutes to reach the brain. This could explain why about five minutes after we fire up a stogie, we get an overwhelming feeling of calm/buzz factor. What's happening is your brain has just absorbed a large amount of nicotine and is trying adjust.
In terms of quitting nicotine and its negative effects on creativity, after someone's brain has become used to nicotine (i.e. tolerance) it is easy to see that if you become used to creating while having nicotine in your system, then depriving your system of nicotine will affect the way your brain creates new things. You're depriving it of an element that it utilized in order to produce a creation. So, fire 'em up!
