Why is Columbus day still a federal holiday?

I'm baffled. Most schools don't recognize the day, it's a fact that Columbus did not technically discover America and this guy raped, murdered, and pillaged Genghis Khan style. We don't have a Genghis Khan day, so why have Columbus day?

Granted, I'm not bitching because I have the day off. I'm just curious.

I couldnt care less, as a teacher i welcome all of these holidays. I wonder why they dont just take away this day off and make September 11th a national holiday. Growing up in VA, what I always loved was Lee Jackson King Day, which has now been renamed MLK Day. I found it odd that a day was named after two Confederate Generals (granted they did not own slaves) and a civil rights leader.

It's a holiday??? Not for me.

It doesn't make any sense when it's a Federal holiday yet some have it off & some don't. What's craziest I think is that the bond markets are closed but stock market is open? WTF?

The Khan though he was a barbarian he did do some fantastic things for the little people after he sacked and be-headed the leaders. He instituted a school system, offered freedom of religion, and developed the trade route with a common currency...He really did a lot of really great things plus he was a bad a$$ tactician.

There are many people in which we celebrate that did similar things that Columbus did, such as rape, murder and pillage. Why does everybody hate on Columbus?

All of these people and groups committed evil acts, yet they also made great contributions to society.

Besides, Chris Columbus has made some great films through the years, such as Harry Potter, The Goonies, and numerous others.
