Gym Etiquette
Here's my rant for today:
Ok so this morning I was at the little gym in the clubhouse of my complex. There was a young lady on the treadmill next to me, who was there before I was. Well upon the completion of her run which was unusual as she was running sideways and backwards on the treadmill, (something I wouldn't recommend) and having her sweaty hand all over it, Jumps of the machine and just leaves. Doesn't even bother to wipe the machine down. Now I'm by no means a germ or neat freak, but come on! In our 15 x 15 gym there are TWO sanitary wipe dispensers. It takes all of 30 seconds to wipe it down. What happened to common courtesy??? Lucky for her she bolted so quickly I had no chance to kindly recommend her to wipe it down. Now it wouldn't of been as big of a deal it she wasn't sweating profusely. Is it just me or does this bother anyone else? There are just some things people I feel should do out of common courtesy- i.e. wash your hands after using the rest room, hold the door for someone, use you turn signals, don’t be on you cell phone at the register of a store, and wipe down gym equipment after you drenched it in your sweat.

Re: Gym Etiquette
That stinks. You should give the common courtesy to wipe your equipment. I work in an exercise store and we wipe everything even when a customer steps on it. Just common courtesy

Re: Gym Etiquette
At my gym, people tend to wipe down their cardio equipment when they're done with it, but nobody wipes down pulleys, bars, or benches. I don't see why the cardio equipment deserves special attention.
I understand if her hands were dripping with sweat, then sure...go wipe it down. But for the most part, I find this to be unnecessary. I guess I don't do long cardio sessions so that may make a difference. I'd have to be sweating a ridiculous amount before my hands started dripping with sweat. Also, if she was on the treadmill running, why were her hands all over it? Typically you don't hold onto a machine while running. |

As for the girl she was running, side stepping, walking backwards and walking at an extreme incline and hold on to the console (not the handle). Her hands were all over the place even have moving her hair around, which, of course, was sweaty. That said, our complex doesn't clean the gym as religious as most commercial gyms would, so every bit helps to keep is sanitary.

Re: Gym Etiquette
Gross! Anytime you workout on a piece of equipment and you are sweating that much then take a towel and wipe it off, esp. when you are on those things where you lay down. As far as the equipment where you have your hands on it and you know people use those areas afterwards it's common sense ( or so we think ) to at least make an effort to clean it up. When you see people sweating like farm animals, picking at themselves,,,running their hands over places where they sneeze, cough, hair, etc etc I prefer to work out at home anymore and never use gyms. It's bad enough to watch people workout and sweat all over the place and then jump into the pool or jacuzzi without benefit of a quick shower that stopped me from going to the gyms.

Re: Gym Etiquette
Yesterday I happened upon a particular piece of equipment that had pools of sweat left on it. In that case, I have to say...it should have been wiped down. I've never seen that before. I'm talking POOLS of sweat accumulated on the pads (which were horizontal so the sweat wasn't about to drip off by itself).

Re: Gym Etiquette
Be thankful you don't belong to my gym (a Gold's nonetheless). One day in the winter I showed up and there was a sign saying that due to the economic times, the owner was removing the TOWELS from the gym. He said it cost a lot of money to wash them and people were stealing 10 a day. So, I put my membership on hold and started working out at home. Tried cancelling my membership last month, but of course I had to give a 60 day notice first. So, I'm getting charged for the gym for the rest of this month before it cancels.
So, I go yesterday for the first time in 7 months or so and there's still no towels and only PAPER TOWELS in various areas of the gym. Absolutely disgusting. I won't miss the place. Hardly anyone sanitized their bench after they were done using it. |
