Are we really that anti-social
Ok heard on the news, that in repsonse to the all the talk about banning texting while driving that a company has developed/develping a talk-to-text voice recongition texting application for phones.
Hold on isn't that the same as just picking up the damn phone and calling someone??? Society is heading in a bad direction. Bad enough teens are glued to their phones and computer 24/7 and don't get any human to human face time and interaction. Now we have this...Come on SERIOUSLY??!? what do you guys/gals think?

Re: Are we really that anti-social
You're right, because of technology people are forgetting how to relate. A friend of mine works with the youth at his church. They recently went to a summer camp for a week and he told them that iPods, cell phones, video games, etc, would not be allowed. For the first day or two they didn't know what to do with out their electronics! Finally they came to grips with reality and actually started having fun with each other without the tech toys. That's why I look forward to hanging out, drinking a good brew, and smokin a good stogie with people. It's the way interaction was meant to be.

I couldn't agree with you more, Matt, I taught middle school and saw it first hand.
Give me good food, good drinks, good smokes and good people and I can be entertained for days.

Re: Are we really that anti-social
I am 39 and I love to text. I still interact with people but texting is great to keep things short. Calling someone you have to go through the formalities. Hi how are you, blah blah blah. Texting I can say meet me here at this time. Done. If I call someone and meet me here and then hang up I am rude.
I don't think it is bad for kids. Just a new way to communicate. I guess us older folks think face to face is best. Someday they may look back at us and laugh wondering why we had to be face to face to talk when we could do it more efficient ways. I have no clue how I lived without my computer or cell phone. I know I did but how? Life was soooo inefficient. Without this technology I couldn't come here and find out the wealth of info on cigars. I couldn't compare thoughts, prices etc. |

Re: Are we really that anti-social
I text very seldom, but my Wife texts all the time. I'm more of a "I'd rather talk" kinda guy I guess. If I don't have the time or the proper circumstances or situation to talk on the phone, I surely won't be texting either.

Re: Are we really that anti-social
who you calling old? I'm only 26 LOL just messing...
Back on point I'm more worried about the lack of emotional interaction you get from being in the physical proximity, For short blurps I agree it's great, but carrying on a full out convo it is useless, You loose the Non-verbal communication that is 80% communicating in the first place. I see it in my Fiance's littel sister who 15 and i'm worried about how she'll be when she has to interact face to face. there is the intended use and then the unintended use with technology. Take Puff.com - great community with great people and a wealth of information. Bad side is it distracts me from work while at work...(wait that' s not so bad, unless I get caught), Social networking sites can be the same way.

Re: Are we really that anti-social
Its not that new tech is bad, it just slows development of social skills. I know people who write very good emails, but won't look you in the eye.
They would rather send bad news through an email then call or face to face. Maybe this same discussion happens with every new form of communication? "Dam kids these days, they would rather send smoke signals than ride over to talk" |

Re: Are we really that anti-social
Blame it on the parents who give such toys to the teens and dont know how to teach them discipline. Our son has a phone and i told him no texting. He tried to be slick. Well he got caught. I warned him if he did it again that I would take the phone away. I dont play around and I smear it. He didnt clean his room a couple of weeks ago when i asked, I ran sacked his room and threw every toy on the floor all the books on the ground and everything. Took him 3 days to clean his room. After that he makes sure he cleans his room every night.

Good for you...I think there are parents that are as lazy or lazier than the youngins, kids need to learn personal responsibilty, sadly so do some adults.

Re: Are we really that anti-social
I'm anti-social by nature, but I usually find I have a ball when I end up with a group of people. I post a lot on a local fishing board and have met a few people out fishing. Better than just "talking" on a forum.

Re: Are we really that anti-social
Well in this technologys favor... I use texts often when at work and a phone call cannot be done due to the need to not be talking... with that in mind often times the person I am trying to talk to cannot talk either. With all the new no texting laws and no talking on the phone laws... a phone with this tech and a bluetooth allow you to send that text without breaking any laws. And I can talk alot quicker than I can type on a phone.

Re: Are we really that anti-social
I will text when I do not want to talk to someone. (when I know a 1 min conversation will turn into a 10 min one)
But it is overtaking peoples lives, could you imagine kids these days if they had to go back and live before everyone had cell phones. (all the way back to the early 90s) They would not know what to do. The future herfers will sit alone in there house and text there herfmates. |
