Thoughts and prayers heading your way man. I can totally relate to your state of mind. As the father of 4 and one who was born a full three months early, I learned long ago to keep the faith and as has been said many times already in this thread, obtain the best medical care possible. Stay strong!

Prayers for you and your family bro! Don't overthink it, and we are all here if you need to vent.

I second what others have said about chiropractors. From the time I was 19 to 24 I ruptured my two lowest disk in my back THREE times! Docs all siad surgery. I remembered my dad has back surgery when I was a kid, and I remembered his recovery was laying flat on this back for 6 months and not getting out of bed for almost a year. I turned down the surgery, found another doctor, and started doing chiropractor visits twice a week. Now I am all healed up, and move around just fine. I still go to the gym 5 days a week and lit weights, and run like any other human would. The Chiropractor was a life saver for me. Think about it before you go the surgery route.

prayers and strength to you brother. All fathers understand we would take on any thing for our kids. I know that shiners hospitals do wonders for this issue in kids. If you have access to one I would stat there.

Sorry to hear that. I have scoliosis as well. Did your doctor mention anything about the numbers of rating how bad it is? My doctor said I was at an 11, and if it reached 15, I would need a brace. The doctor concluded it was due to my height. If your daughter doesn't reach the point where she needs a brace, then she will be fine. Luckily, scoliosis is self correcting. Mine hasn't gotten any worse and I haven't needed a brace. I was diagnosed with it two years ago. Since she is young, she is probably growing too fast for the rest of her body to keep up with. Stretching once a day helps it and keeping a good posture will as well. Hope all works out for her!

Look at the bright side. Forrest Gump had scoliosis and ended up being able to "run like the wind blows."

Seriously though, there's good advice in this thread and even a couple firsthand accounts. Stay positive and encourage your daughter to persevere and all should work out fine. We're here if you need a sounding board or advice, brother.

Funny that you mention stretching. We caught part of princess bride on Tv and it was the part where westley was on the rack and she said without skipping a beat "hey daddy, maybe I need one of those!" So I think she is in better spirits than me at this point.

And the news just got worse. Curvature varies between 23 and 36%. They will more than likely recommend a brace to prevent further progression.
I'm so angry and frustrated right now. I have been good about not letting her see it but I am really not looking forward to what this is going to do to her self image. Much less how cruel kids at school can be to anyone who looks different. Urg!

Ask your specialist if he has a patient your daughter's age that she can talk to if she needs to. Sometimes they even have support groups for the girls to work with in order to get over those image issues. Please also consider consulting a chiropractor and an holistic health physician who can help you with options traditional MDs don't offer. Remember, empower yourself with knowledge and turn that anger and frustration into information to help your little girl get through this.

Re: My daughter has scoliosis!! Im freaking out!!!

I'm sorry to hear about the unfortunate news, Brandon. If it's any help, like others have said, scoliosis is actually fairly common, and in general does not significantly impact one's ability to lead a normal life. Having to wear a brace (if it comes to that) at this age is no doubt going to be difficult, but you know what? Having a father that obviously cares as much as you do is going to do much more for her emotional health and maturity, in the long run, than any teasing she might get as a teen will take away. You're going to get through it. I'm not saying every day is going to be easy, but you're going to get through it.

As for chiropractors, definitely do your homework if you go that route. Some are excellent, and some are total hacks. A safer option might be looking for a DO in the area that still regularly practices manipulation. They have the exact same education and training that MDs get, plus a lot more.

As other have also said, the kind of information you can get online is often suspect, or skewed, at least. Most of the best resources I know of are paid for by the state of OH for our public library members, and may or may not be available in your area. I'll try to find some that are. I'd strongly suggest calling your local public library and asking what medical sources they offer online. It should all be free for you.

I think it goes without saying that if there's anything we at Puff can do to help, you need but ask.

I switched to a DO a few years back, the care, one on one service, and someone who actually spends time asking how I'm doing and not rushing off to the next patient has been a complete 180 on how I perceived doctors, along with suggestion of eating various foods, or taking suppliments if I want to fix a condition, versus shoving phamicudicals down my throat

I have scoliosis, but to a mild extent, had it all my life - my back does weird things occasionally but I have never required treatment, it's never progressed and my doctors have never seemed overly concerned. So keep a positive attitude, get her to a specialist – it’s not life threatening – perhaps the brace will be corrective and it will improve.
You do have one thing correct – do not show overt fear – your wife will take care of that – keep a stiff upper lip and both will develop strength by your example.

I’m not new to the children’s hospital – my daughter developed extensive bruising and hemorrhaging when she was four – she was rushed from the Dr’s office straight to the Leukemia ward at Fort Worth Childrens Hospital. It began with the extremely painful spinal followed by repeated blood samples and testing – this was very trying as you can imagine, especially with a wife on the verge of a nervous breakdown. Long story short – it wasn’t Leukemia – it was Thrombocytopenia, which in her case was caused by her own defense system identified her own blood platelets as infectious and began destroying them. This was life threatening, but they explained the first step was to administer steroids ay hefty levels – it may or may not get results – fortunately she reacted positively and after four days in the Leuk. ward we were allowed to take her home – she’s fine now with two kids of her own.

The children I met there were the strongest human beings I have ever come to meet.

Stay brave and optimistic – demonstrate strength – it’s contagious – you will be alright and so will the little loved one – trust me!

Thanks for the story and words of encouragement. I am so glad I found this community, the support here could not have come at a better time. I think everything happens for a reason and if anything this will strengthen my resolve as a parent, and make us a stronger family unit, having to go through something like this.

Re: My daughter has scoliosis!! Im freaking out!!!

    So...just an update on this.
We went to the specialist today. Consensus is, we have a "Wait and see" situation. She is at 36% curvature but she is too far along that a brace will really not do her any good. He said we will have to have her come in every few months to have her measured and X-rays done again to see if it continues to progress or has stabilized. Because she went from 20 something to 36 in the span of a year, they fear that she will progress further. If she gets past the 40% mark, they will recommend surgery. We talked about no surgical options, and what we can do NOW to help her. He mentioned working out, strengthening her core and yoga/pilates to help with keeping her healthy and stabilizing her more. Also as a pain deterrent.
The doctor did have something positive to say in that, because she is in minimal pain (she is having pain in her shoulder blades) and she isn't visibly showing signs of the curvature (her hips and shoulders are where they should be) that he doesn't see it really being an issue. He said, by now if it was extreme, she would have much more visible signs of the curvature and be in constant pain.
So, we will get her physically active, and hope and pray. All we can really do.
