Torre tells Yanks to beat it...

Gotta love it! I know I couldn't turn down a one year contract worth a guaranteed $ 5 mil and possible $8...but I don't think he's hurting for cash.

Good move for Joe....rich beyond his wildest dreams, young child at home and 67 years old. Hope he gets to enjoy many great years with his family, he owes the Yankee fans and orginization - nothing.

Godspeed Joe!

Now I hope the Yankee front office do something smart like bringing in Girardi rather than something stupid like promoting Donnie Baseball.

Re: Torre tells Yanks to beat it...

As a Yankee fan, I am glad to see Joe told Steinbrenner to shove it! ankees organization should be castrated for even thinking of lowerign his salary! Did they reduce Cashman's?

This move was designed to get Torre to leave the Yankees on his own accord. The Yankees screwed this one up royally. I have no problem if they did not offer him a new contract; just shook hands and said, "Goodbye." That would have been acceptable. I would have been dissapointed, but I could accept it. This move... petty, plain and simple.

Oh well, I guess we Yankee fans will have to wait and see who the next manager of the Yankees will be.

Re: Torre tells Yanks to beat it...

I think people give Torre way too much credit. He got fired from the Cardinals for a very good reason. He didn't produce anything from a very good set of players. Then, he goes to the Yanks and enherits the largest salary in baseball by far and wins some world series titles and then, nothing. For the talent on that team to go to waste like it has in recent years is inexcusable. To not win a WS, he very well should have gotten a cut in salary and/or fired. Maybe he did well when he first got there, although I think the players made that happen, but to be diplomatic for people who like Torre, I will say that maybe he lost his fire, so to speak.

See yens Joe, class act IMO. Are the Reds looking for a manager? Doesn't matter Joe has higher standards than that.

No, they found this guy named Dusty Baker, never heard of him.
Just Kidding. He should be able to do something with the talent.

We all know Dusty Baker has no idea what to do with talent!

I for one am hoping they don't hand the job to Don Mattingly. I'd much rather see Joe Girardi coach the Yanks...

Life long Yankee fan and I'm glad Joe told them to shove it up their ass. The old man has taken too much shit from the organization for doing what he's done. Not sure if I want Mattingly despite him being my all time favorite player. I think it's more out of fear of seeing him fail. Definitely don't want LaRussa. I never have liked him. Too bad the Mets didn't fire Willie.

But the $8 Million was only IF they won the World Series. He's a good manager, and did the right thing by walking. All he can do is make the lineup - he can't pitch, hit, or catch for the overpaid players on the roster.

Kidding, right? As the Reds are in something of a "rebuilding mode" he is the perfect manager, . Rather than play the rooks, he'll bring-in his (mediocre at best) veteran buddies, a-la Nefi Perez. And let's hope you don't have any young pitching talent cause he'll work them into the ground. And if you are expecting a consistent lineup - look elsewhere. Yup...he'll do something with that talent. Bench it or destroy it. But hey - good luck!

(from a die-hard Cubs fan )

Not to argue or anything, but Larussa proved to be a better coach in STL than Torre, without a doubt. Just a fact for ya.

From what I am reading it turned into $8 million if they just made the World Series...and if they made the World Series he was guaranteed $8 million for 2009 as well.

Not that $5 million is peanuts he would still be the highest paid manager in baseball I believe Pinella is second at $3.5 million per. So they didn't really offer him peanuts.

He just got tired of dealing with their BS. Can't say I blame him.

If all managers can do is make a lineup why pay anyone more then minimum wage. I can use a pencil and a lineup card.

Re: Torre tells Yanks to beat it...

Lot's of respect for Joe - guess he's tired of being the scapegoat. Hope he lands someplace that will appreciate him.

That fish is rotting from the head down. As long as Steinbrenner is at the helm and Cashman is GM, I wish them nothing but a sniff at the championship every year.
