Actually, I think that every call by a ref that is even somewhat questionable is reviewed each week.
I saw an episode of "Six Days to Sunday" (was an NFL channel show that would follow a certain player preparing for the next game - last year, doesn't seem to be around any more)
about the refs, following Ed Hochuli. Some interesting things to note were weekly tests on very detailed rules questions, as well as reviews of calls that potentially wrong. I forget what the outcome was if they decided the call was wrong, put it was definitely under careful scrutiny...

I've gotten the feeling this year from the NCAA games and a few NFL games that the refs walk around the field like they're God. The quote above about the wrestling ref saying 'I make the calls not you' is a good example of that. Their mistakes can throw a game just as easily as a personal foul.
I completely agree with you about the refs. They should be held to a very high standard. There is no place for rudeness and unsportsmanlike like conduct from anyone during competition. (although good luck with getting rid of that) I remember in high school ball you had a team captain and if there was a disagreement with a ref you took your complaint to the captain who then went to the ref. My coach in school would bench you for the rest of the game if you mouthed of to a ref.

You also need to use a little common sense. In a VERY limited context, it could be considered a slur. There is a big difference between a white guy saying to his black waiter "hey boy, my fork is dirty, go fetch me a clean one" and a ref saying to a player "boy, I was playin' football when you were in daipers", or even "boy, keep it up and I'll flag you again".

I think Rolle was just frustrated watching the game slip away.

We called each other boy when I was growing up. Never new this. Guess I'm just an uneducated idiot.

From Webster's

BOY
1. often offensive : a male servant

I swear I had never heard that.

I agree with you that Rolle most likely was frustrated with the game slipping away and the call that was made. IMO, the Ravens defense has gotten away with a lot of physical play that is technically against the rules. since they play that way consistently, they tend to get away with it. So, he may have been surprised that they were finally called on an actual rule infraction. That does not excuse what he said, imo. Although I was not privy to what really was said with the tone it was delivered with, I can say that Rolle most likely did not say what he said with respect. I have the feeling that the referee responded to the remark in an equally disrespectful manner. I find it hard to believe the use of the term "boy" was meant in any way other than one in which to position the player in an inferior on the field.

As far as the respect thing goes, yes, I was taught to respect authority, which in this case is the referee. I also was taught that if you hold a position of authority, you must maintain that respect by not abusing that position. I do not think either side involved in this can claim they did the right thing. What they can do is say they acted like children who do not know any better. .
