Re: Patrick Roy's son can fight too....

I think there are couple of contextual things here that haven't been mentioned and I'm not sure how they apply so I'll defer to icehog for explanation.

One Roy's team was down 10-1 and I would assume his kid was responsible for those 10 goals so I suspect that was part of why Roy Sr. ordered the fight.

The second is fighting in the Canadian minors is pretty common unlike the current rules in the NHL. To me it looked like Roy Jr looked back to the bench while he was beating on that guy before he continued. From what I understand turtleing or trying to isn't very respected.

Regardless there were a lot of code violations. IMO Roy Jr shouldn't have cold cocked a guy who didn't want to fight and shouldn't have kept beating him while he was on the ice not fighting back. It's not like he hit him twice and quit he hit him a lot.

As for not coaching in the NHL depends on whether there is a Jerry Jones kind of owner out their who wants a HOF player as a coach.

So my question to Icehog is do you think the 10-1 had to do with why Roy Sr. ordered the fight? Second question is do you think that this got more press than merited because of who was involved vs what happened considering the amount of fighting that goes on in the Canadian minor leagues. Had this been just a coach and a goalie and didn't have the HOF father son aspect would it have been a look at this on the hightlights and forgotten?

The coaches of both teams should be ashamed of themselves for letting a ten man brawl break out in a major junior game the 1st place.

Goalies are protected from fighting unless they instigate the fight. To me this includes fights with other goalies. In other words, a goalie should never have to fight anyone he doesn't want to, including the other goalie.

Most importantly, you never beat someone who isn't fighting back and is laying on the ice. Ever. That's not a fight.
Agreed on all points.

Frustration absolutely played a part in my opinion.

I think it has garnered MUCH more attention than it would have otherwise. As others have mentioned, fighting in more commonplace in the QMJHL and other junior leagues than in the NHL at this point. This would likely have been nothing more than a youtube "gotta see this" if not for the Roy connection.
