Didn't look too tough with the other goalie just standing there...and I hope he didnt learn to fight from his dad, every Patrick Roy fight I've seen his face was bloody at the end.

It didn't look necessary to me, but I have these questions.

What's proper hockey etiquette call for when one guy is chilling and watching the fight?
Was he really waiting for action or trying to stay out of it?
I've seen goalie's square off before as to not be left out of the brawl, so what is the norm?
And if you're on the ice is it a given you better be ready to fight?

What little Roy did was flat out wrong. He broke the first rule of hockey fighting. 2 guys agree to have a go and that's it. Little Roy attacked another man who didn't want to fight. He's lucky he doesn't get brought up on assault charges! Sr. was always a jerk but a great goalie. It appears his son has followed the attitude/class of his father.

Re: Patrick Roy's son can fight too....

probably why i stopped watching hockey, the glorification of fights.

i use to love watching the KC Blades (and as a kid, the St. Louis Blues), but i preferred the Blades due to the infrequency of fights.

i don't see the point in it at all. maybe they should adopt football/baseball/basketball stances on fighting during a game and suspend them for double digit games instead of 2-5 minute "penalties".

some ppl like the "sport" and action of hockey... i guess it's the same way some ppl watch NASCAR for the crashes.

Re: Patrick Roy's son can fight too....

His Dad (Patrick) apparently waved him down the ice, basically "ordering" him to fight the other goalie. ESPN.com and Jacque Demers think it will cost Roy a chance to ever coach at the NHL level. If that's how he coaches his own kid, probably good that he won't see an NHL bench.

I agree completely. The fighting takes away from the game IMO.......it's about as bad as people taking dives in soccer.

1. Usually if a guy is just standing and watching you don't touch him, in the NHL if you just grab a guy and start punching him thats an Instigator penalty and you get 2 minutes PLUS 5 for fighting PLUS a 10 minute misconduct. It looked to me like the other goalie was just watching and not wanting to get involved.

2. All of the goalie fights I've seen started off with one guy being outnumbered. If one player is getting beat up buy 2 guys a goalie might grab one of them, then usually the other goalie jumps in. If a goalie joins a fight he gets a 2 minute leaving the crease penalty and they get kicked out of the game.

3. Most teams have an enforcer(s) who will fight for his other teammates. Star players are not expected to fight and are strongly discouraged by their teams. If a star lays a really cheap shot he might get grabbed and roughed up but another teammate will step in as soon as they can.

Fighting in hockey is nothing like it was in the 70s and 80s...mandatory suspensions for people coming off the bench, out of the box, etc means that fighting is usually willing tough guy Vs willing tough guy. From the numbers I saw mid-season, fighting majors were well under one per game on average, so the whole "hockey is all about fighting" just doesn't apply anymore.

Interesting. I haven't seen a hockey game in ages, so what do I know. Didn't watch a single game this year. I'm gonna have to change that next season and break out the Hawks Jerseys a little more.

Thanks GHC_Hambone.

I'm don't agree with that guys conduct in that situation, but I do like to watch fights and I believe it is part of hockey. Surely I wouldn't want the whole game to be thrown because of brawls, but it's going to happen and I'm happy to watch.

Re: Patrick Roy's son can fight too....

I think that there is a place for fighting in professional hockey, but what Johnathan did was way out of line. There are some unofficial "rules" to how fighting works in hockey and if they were honored, this incident never would have happened.

The coaches of both teams should be ashamed of themselves for letting a ten man brawl break out in a major junior game the 1st place.

Goalies are protected from fighting unless they instigate the fight. To me this includes fights with other goalies. In other words, a goalie should never have to fight anyone he doesn't want to, including the other goalie.

Most importantly, you never beat someone who isn't fighting back and is laying on the ice. Ever. That's not a fight.
