this might seem callous to some but...

Many of you have probably heard the story of "great sportsmanship" shown in the college softball game when 2 girls of the opposing team carried a girl who hit the game winning home run and then blew out a knee around the bases. if not here's the storyhttp://msn.foxsports.com/olympics/st...1708?GT1=39002

My point is this would have never happened in a men's baseball game, for 2 reasons. one, the opposing team would not help, and two, they wouldn't need to help because the injured player still had one good knee. Most men would get up and hop around the bases, worrying about the game first and the injury later. A simple difference, not for better or worse, between the sexes when it comes to competition. Do you agree or disagree??

I think that this was a great show of sportsmanship in a Division II playoff game. The problem is that the umpires did not know the rules, after a home run, the injured player may have a replacement runner finish out the home run. I would hope that in a high school or college game, men or women, that sportsmanship would win out and it generally does.

agreed, i also heard about the misinterpretation of the rules. it was a great show of sportsmanship, i just think it wouldn't happen in a men's game for the reasons I stated. Not implying anything other than different attitudes between most men and women in a competitive environment. I applaud what the young ladies did, just don't see it happening in a men's game.

Ok. I've seen plenty of guys rolling on the floor/gound in agony because they blew thier knee out. They didn't continue. I don't get this thread at all.

I've done it and I didn't continue.

I don't know about male baseball players hopping up and limping around the bases. This IS the sport whos IR report reads, out for blisters, tweeked muscles. Now a hockey player.....would have dragged a bleeding stump around the bases and then beat the catcher into submission with the discarded leg!

Disagree.

You could not have drawn that conclusion from observing team play in the Women's Underwater Hockey League, Women's Fencing, or Women's Soccer, among other sports.

(Still have some of those scars)

I ALSO think what they did was WAY cool!

Where's my foil? Someone needs some punishment!!

Sportsmanship isn't - or shouldn't be - limited by gender. Refusing to show sportsmanship because the opponent still has one good knee would be a load of dookey.

Do you think Jordan would have help Magic off the court? Hell no. Men have to much pride and a killer instinct to do such a thing. Jordan and Bird have even said that before. They love each other off the court, but step on the hardwood and all that goes out the door.

Then again DII softball, is hardly a NBA playoff game.

That's how it's always been in men's competitive sports. Even when we all were in highschool. look back to highschool football....your buddy played for the other team. After the game you'd grill and hang out for hours.....but as soon as that clock started ticking, all friendships went out the window.

callous or not, it's the truth.

i'll agree to disagree with you. i just can't imagine not getting up and hopping around the bases if the game is on the line. if i am in any kind of competitive contest, winning is ultra-important, within reason of course. i guess there is where we disagree, if it only takes one leg and a few minutes of pain to win a game, to me, that is not much, and well worth the temporary agony. and i do believe there are plenty of women who would do the same.

That depends on how much pain you are in. Have you ever been in so much much pain you can't think straight? Pain that makes you to not be able to even remember your name? I have. Several times. My body is much more important than some crappy game that means absolutly nothing in the grand scheme of things. Some people take games way too seriously. Winning should never overshadow common sense. But for some, it does and that's too bad.

Re: this might seem callous to some but...

You have to take it in perspective. Competition is one thing but being a humble winner and showing sportsmanship when you lose is fundamental. I cant say this overlays to all sports, but the difference here is she hit the game winner and the game is for all practical purposes over. I tell you what, had it been an inside the parker, she would have been tagged out well before she was helped up. Once the game is over it is over. Find a pub and raise a pint and promise to beat their azzzzz the next time. During a game, no help no how.

Exactly. I blew out a knee in a game and I was done immediately...no suck'n it up, no jogging off the field. Without making this a testosterone or a male vs female thing, I think it was impressive based on the act of sportsmanship regardless of the severity of the injury.

Same with hockey...If I play against a team with a buddy on it, we may have beers and grill out after a game. But if he gives my a slash on the wrist during the game, he's getting a punch in the mush.
