Unfortunately, the interpretation is correct. When a player is off the pitch (end line), for the purposes of determining offside position, he is deemed to be on the end line.

When I first watched the play, I could not believe that offside was not called. When I heard one of the announcers state there was a player off the pitch but he "didn't count", I reviewed the video and concur with the linesman's assessment. The US is not the only country with misinformed announcers.

I would figure that the player off the pitch, injured couldn't be considered part of the play, just like an attacking player who "removes himself from the play" wouldn't be offsides. oh well. POINTS!!!!!my man Dirk Kuyt with 2 assists!

Re: Euro 08 Pool

I clearly remember this exact situtation coming up in ref class. The book says its a goal- its a goal. Player never received permission to leave the field.

Hopefully this will prevent a player from rolling around on the ground near his own box.

Re: Euro 08 Pool

The offsides call, according to the letter of the law AND the spirit/intention, was wrong in my opinion:

Quote:
If a defending player steps behind his own goal line in order to place
an opponent in an offside position, the referee shall allow play to
continue and caution the defender for deliberately leaving the fi eld
of play without the referee’s permission when the ball is next out of
play.
The spirit, and even the letter there talk about a tactical decision. Panucci was just clobbered.

As aldukes said though, this precedent for interpretation may keep people from simulation, if this is the reason they are taking such great pains to support the decision they need to rewrite the language immediately. It's not as though this situation happens often. Hardly ever in fact. Just a weird call.

The assists count same as the goals, if you check the entry form there is a points column by your star performers choices.

Play hadn't ceased, and therefore the ref couldn't have given permission for the player to leave the field, for this reason, he is considered as being on the touchline. Had he been clobbered and laid on the goal line, he would still have played Ruud onside, but possibly stopped the goal.

Players need consistency in reffing decisions, and this clearly sets a precedence early in the tournament - as sucky as it may be, at least the line has been drawn.

not me... i'm dead last

as far as the offsides contraversy... i would think that it was either offsides or play shoud of stopped because a player was pretty much punched in the back of the head. Something like that qualifies a stop of play or play on because the player is off the pitch which would deem him offsides

Cool Re: Euro 08 Pool

Would it make me a know-it-all jerk if I pointed out that it's "offside," not "offsides?"
