Navy orders Cardinals pick to report for duty
NORFOLK, Va. - A Naval Academy graduate drafted last week by the St. Louis Cardinals was denied a bid to play ball Thursday and ordered to report for duty. Mitch Harris, a newly commissioned ensign and Naval Academy graduate, must serve a five-year active duty commitment, Navy Secretary Donald C. Winter ruled. ------------------------------ I guess the kid didn't read the contract he signed when he went to the academy... Someone should tell the kid about a little known football player by the name of Roger Staubach. Roger was a great Navy player, then served his country... then became a stinking Dallas Cowboy and made them great. |

Re: What was this Kid thinking
I guess he was thinking he would get the same treatment as Caleb Campbell.
from the same article: "Caleb Campbell was drafted by the Detroit Lions this year, becoming the first Army football player to benefit from a new policy allowing athletes with a chance to play professionally to complete their service by serving as recruiters and in the reserves. " Seems to me that the services need to get their act together and be consistent. I really can't blame the kid for giving it a shot to play pro ball, after all he doesn't make policy. |

Re: What was this Kid thinking
The kid would have a chance if he did not have to go to the minor leagues. The new policy only covers graduates who would have a chance to play at the major league level. It is also determined on a case by case basis.

I didn't know about that new policy... but my honest opinion of it is that it sux... you want to go to a Military Academy then you serve in the Military.

David Robinson graduated from Navy and was drafted by the Spurs, but had to serve first. His duty was cut from 5 to 2 years. But he still served

Re: What was this Kid thinking
If I'm not mistaken, so far only the army allows its cadets this privilege. I agree though, they should have to serve somehow, at least a lengthy reserve stint.

Roger Staubach did his tour. I am pretty sure it worked out for him!!!
Chad Hennings did his tour. Read the fine print. It is all about Honor, Family and the Lord. Hard to look either in the eye and say I was just kidding!!! tt ![]() |

On the other hand you have players like Phil McConkey who served four years on active duty before being allowed to join the Giants. Joe Bellino was another who played with Roger at Navy. He served active duty and then bounced around the league with the Pats for a couple of years. Last edited by taltos; 06-14-2008 at 04:51 AM.. Reason: added info |
