NASCAR Yesterday

I lived in Wilkesboro for more than a decade. I heard tell that Bill France promised Enoch Staley (N. Wilkesboro Speedway owner) he'd always have two race venues as long as he lived. Staley gave a lot to help get NASCAR going and Mr. France, it is said, backed up the help he gave to the new motorsport when winners purses were hard to pay just from the gate. The venues were sold two seasons after Mr. Staley passed.

The short track was always one of my favorites but, yeah, parking was cramped and the owner never gave in for the investments that all the glossier tracks had.

I hate the history of the Speedway has rolled over and died. Each time a I go back to the home place I see the end of the beginning getting ready to collapse. It's a shame the geniues in Wilkes County weren't able to turn the track into the official NASCAR Museum. Ashes to ashes.

But Bristol?! WOW! What a race. I guess I'm a short track dog. You?

I am a NASCAR freak. It is truly sad to see this happen. I always enjoyed the races at Wilkesboro

Re: NASCAR Yesterday

I live down the road from Rockingham. They got screwed too. I'm glad Hillenburg bought this track and is putting it to use though. I made it to the ARCA race there this year. There is a USAR race scheduled for later in the year. Still, it's no NASCAR, but at least Rockingham isn't rotting away like N. Wilkesboro. That is a shame that someone hasn't done something w/ it.

Love short tracks, go to Martinsburg every year. Born and raised on short tracks, grew up at Wall stadium in Jersey.

Re: NASCAR Yesterday

Those of you in NC/SC check out the Dillon Motor Speedway in Dillon, SC. They have some great Saturday night short track action.

Or the track in Caraway, NC. They've got some good Saturday night bangin' there too!

Don't forget about the legendary Hickory Motor Speedway here in NC. All the greats raced there at one time.

I think they were running figure-eight races (and oval) when I moved to Wilkes. KaPOW! Eight or oval it was a track where motivated racers could afford to put a car on a track. I knew a couple of guys who towed their cars over there every week.

Re: NASCAR Yesterday

I wish they would take a race away from boring Pocono and give one to Kentucky Speedway. I absolutely despise Pocono. There is absolutely no passing unless it is a re-start or they throw a "debris" caution.
