Re: Official MMA thread.
UFC veteran Randy Couture announced his retirement from Mixed Martial Arts following a devastating loss in Saturday's rubber match against Light Heavyweight Champion Chuck Liddell.
Although Couture made it to the second round this time, as with the second fight, a slip on Randy's part exposed his face to a brutal shot from Liddell. Liddell then sealed the deal with some more punches to finish off Couture's MMA career at 1-28 in the second round. Liddell's win should not have come as a surprise - he was undoubtedly the favorite going into the fight. But the crowd, which was heavily behind Couture, did not care about the Vegas odds. It wanted to see a title change, and it shared in the heartbreak of Randy's loss. Elsewhere, Frank Mir's return fight against UFC newcomer Marcio Cruz was not his finest moment, Mir's face was bloodied in Cruz's quick TKO victory, the second victory in his MMA career. Full Results: *Prelim Fights* Keith Jardine b. Mike Whitehead by unanimous decision (29-2 Jeff Monson b. Branden Lee Hinkle by submission (4:35R1) -- This fight aired prior to the main-event Paul Buentello b. Gilbert Aldana by TKO (2-27R2) -- This fight aired after the main-event Alessio Sakara b. Elvis Sinosic by unanimous decision (29-25, 29-26, 29-26) Main-Card Fights Joe Riggs b. Nick Diaz by unanimous decision (29-28, 30-27, 29-2 Renato Sobral b. Mike Van Arsdale by submission (2-21R1) Marcio Cruz b. Frank Mir (4-10R1) Brandon Vera b. Justin Eilers by KO (1-25R1) Chuck Liddell b. Randy Couture by KO (1-28R2) AFTER THE FIGHT: The WrestlingObserver reports that UFC's Nick Diaz and Joe Riggs got into a fist-fight at a Las Vegas hospital following their PPV fight that went the distance. Although the judges decided that Joe Riggs won the close, three-round fight, Nick Diaz felt that he actually won the fight, and the two exchanged words. Diaz then planted what is being called a sucker punch on Riggs; the winner came back to continue the fight before the two were pulled apart. Riggs reportedly decided against pressing charges. NCRM |

Re: Official MMA thread.
Some pretty good fights. The Diaz riggs fights was damn good. I thought Diaz would take it, though now I think I'm happy Riggs took the decision.
Jeff Monson, man, I have to claim I forgot who he was. I remember his first I fight in the ufc when he fought a bigger version of himself, and he just rocked forward and back and planted a knockout punch on the guy. Frank Mir looked as if he just took too many hit off the bong in the locker room when he walked in the cage. Cruz fought well and don't want to take anything away from, though Mir just did not look ready for this fight. Welp, Liddell dropped Couture again. And looks like I didn't hit .500 on my picks.

Re: Official MMA thread.
Well, I ended up ordering UFC 57 and it turned out to be a pretty good show. I was disappointed with Randy Couture. I don't know why he just stood there trying to trade with Chuck. You would have thought he learned that lesson in their second fight. Oh, and what the #$@$ was up with Frank Mir? I don't think anyone saw that coming. Both Vera and Monson looked promising. Buentello put on a good show. Diaz proved again that he's a sore loser. I'd comment some more, but I'm getting too tired.
upcoming events: Pride 31 Mark Hunt vs Yosuke Nishijima Tsuyoshi Kohsaka vs Mario Sperry Mark Coleman vs Mauricio 'Shogun' Rua Sergei Kharitonov vs Alistair Overeem Jon Olav Einemo vs Fabricio Werdum Quinton 'Rampage' Jackson vs Dong Sik Yoon Pedro Rizzo vs Roman Zentsov Josh Barnett vs Kazuhiro Nakamura UFC 58 Rich Franklin vs David Loiseau Georges St-Pierre vs BJ Penn ( x10) John Alessio vs Diego Sanchez Joe Doerksen vs Nathan Marquardt Steve Vigneault vs Mike Swick Mark Hominick vs Yves Edwards Sam Stout vs Kenny Florian Rob MacDonald vs Jason Lambert Christophe Midoux vs Tom Murphy |

Might order the Pride fight much higher quality fighters on that card, but probably wont order the UFC event it looks lackluster to say the least. Franklin is over-rated with a glass jaw. George St Pierre is the man and Penn is a very good fighter, this should be the best fight of the night but I would take George. Other than Diego, the rest of the fight looks like a "who is the loser from the Ultimate Fighter TV show." Sad thing about this UFC PPV is the St. Pierre and BJ Penn fight with sell more tickets than Franklin.Basically UFC still has some catching up to do to compete with Pride's Quality of Fighters. I mean not one Heavyweight in UFC could beat Fedor imo. CBF ![]()

Re: Official MMA thread.
Just to clear up something, Frank Mir broke his femur in his motorcycle accident, not his arm. I don't know why I was thinking it was his arm, probably because he broke Tim Sylvia's arm in their fight just prior to the accident.

I agree with some of what Tim was saying, but.....
"I would love to see Sylvia try and stand with him ." he'd have his hands full.

Re: Official MMA thread.
Ok, I'm talking the All-American team. That's just the way I am.
Hughes toughest fight yet. And the Penn GSP should be a burner.

Re: Official MMA thread.
No one watched it? I actually was posting a reply a while back and something happened and lost what I was typing up, so.....
Rich Franklin dominated this fight throughout. I was really surprised that Loiseau just seemed to be in checkmate and was looking for a bit more explosiveness from him. Can't trash him for this, Franklin is a top notch fighter. In all it was a good fight. GSP took the decision against Penn. HaHa! I wonder how Penn will handle this. GSP should be looking at the title shot now and Hughes better use this Gracie fight to prepare. |

Re: Official MMA thread.
Didn't see it. Here are the results and a small write-up:
Full Fight Results Tom Murphy defeats Icho Larenas by TKO at 1:59 in round 3. Jason Lambert defeats Rob MacDonald with a Kimura at 1:54 in round 1. Sam Stout defeats Spencer Fisher via split decision. Mark Hominick upsets Yves Edwards with a triangle arm bar at 1:52 in round 2. Nathan Marquardt defeats Joe Doerksen via unanimous decision. Mike Swick defeats Steve Vigneault with a guillotine choke at 2:09 in round 1. Georges St. Pierre defeats BJ Penn via split decision. Rich Franklin defeats David Loiseau via unanimous decision. UFC 58 featured several battles that definitely lived up to the hype generated by the UFC. Four fights went the distance and the fans, both in the Mandalay Bay Event Center, and at home watching on pay per view, certainly got their money's worth. Rich Franklin has once again come out on top after dominating his fight against David Loiseau. Loiseau put up an excellent fight, even knocking down Rich Franklin in the third round with a great left hook. The fight went the distance though, and towards the end Loiseau's face was so swollen he looked like he could barely see. David Loiseau certainly earned the respect of anyone watching. The fact that he absolutely refused to give up and still gave his all till the end shows that he is a remarkably tough fighter. BJ Penn was defeated by Georges St. Pierre in a very close, debatable decision. Many felt that Penn actually won the fight, due to the obvious damage that he inflicted upon St. Pierre, and the seemingly higher number of strikes actually hitting their intended target. St. Pierre was the busier fighter though, a factor that likely got him the win. By winning this fight, St. Pierre will likely get a rematch soon against Matt Hughes, the current welterweight champion. NCRM ![]() |

Re: Official MMA thread.
I thought this thread had died
.I watched it and I have to say it was one of the best UFC's I've seen in a while. The GSP vs BJ Penn fight was awesome! BJ put a beating on him for the first few minutes, but GSP didn't quit. He just kept coming at him the whole fight. I can't wait to see him finally get his rematch with Hughes. The Franklin vs Loiseau fight was a five round beating couresy of Rich. Gotta give credit to Loiseau for not giving up, though. That guy's got a lot of heart. ![]() Oh yeah, and who would have ever thought Yves would get tapped ?!?Next up, UFC 59 and Pride Bushido 10 |
