This is what I hate about baseball...

It has been reported that the Milwaukee Brewers made a 100 million 5 year offer to CC Sabathia. From the Milwaukee JS Online page.

"In a report Tuesday by SI.com's Jon Heyman on the New York Yankees' quest to sign Sabathia, an unnamed executive with a big-market club derisively referred to the Brewers' offer as "window dressing."

"How does he know what our offer is?" Melvin responded. "That's all I'll say."

I really wish we had a salary cap. I remember a few year back when Bob Ucher(sp) was reporting on club's tv revenue. At that time, the Brewers received 4 million per year while the Yankees received over 100 million per year. It's nearly impossible to compete with the big market teams even though the Brewers sold out most of their games this season.

I absolutely agree that MLB needs a hard salary cap.
Yes, this is from a Red Sox fan. I know that my team has taken full advantage of being able to outspend most others in recent years and I love having them be as competitive as they have been recently, but for the balance of Major League Baseball a salary cap is NEEDED so many other teams can be competitive too.

The Rays did just fine with a terribly small payroll....

+1 for having a CAP!

Not so much that I am a die hard Royals fan here in KC, but I would at least like to be able to go see any game where both teams have a chance.

I would also like to see athletes come back to playing for the game and competition not just playing to get the big payday and then cruise until right before their contract is going to expire.

Another vote for salary cap!

Your Royals were pretty competitive this past year! They did not play the patsy to anyone. Hell, they beat the Twins 2 of 3 on the road at the absolute end of the season and basically erased them from the playoffs. They play hard and they're fun to watch.

Unfortunately, the Sabbathia offer IS window dressing. He will get something close to what Santana got from the Mets. Quite honestly, with no salary cap, there are about 3 teams that can afford Sabbathia right now.

Very true, but it helps having really early draft picks a few years in a row.

A do argee that a salary cap is a great idea.

.
The Brewers have also benefited from high draft choices due to crappy seasons in the past. Now, their good players attract the attention of the league. In essence, they become nothing more than a farm system for the big market teams.

Where would the Green Bay Packers be without revenue sharing and a salary cap? Out of business, I'm afraid.

Yes, but what is going to happen when all their rookie contracts run out and they have to really pay those guys?

Let them go via free agency and get draft pick compensation, or trade them for prospects. Either way. Its a viscous cycle

Re: This is what I hate about baseball...

Well, i'm not really a fan of free agency. Or at least that there need to be tighter restrictions on contracts.. like 5 yr minimums with performance incentives or something. As well as a salary cap. Lets put bot of those in there. Players in all sports are becoming bigger than the game and the teams they are supposed to be playing for. While i'm ranting....i can stand corporate sponsership of parks/arenas. For instance, in PHX, the Dbacks played in Bank One Ballpark, now Chase Field, and then something else down the line .....

When I tell my kids of the great parks of yester-year.. am i going to need to recite the 20 previous names that they been marketed under?

The Tampa Bay Rays beg to differ. The Marlins won two WS. The Rockies made the WS two seasons ago. The Yankees had the highest payroll in baseball and didn't make the playoffs. The BoSox had one of the highest payrolls and got knocked out of the playoffs by a team with one of the lowest. Explain why exactly your bitching? Maybe the Brewers should let Sabathia go and invest in better scouts lol.

I may be off in left field, or right for that matter but didn't the Marlins spend a lot to get to the world series, then get rid of everyone the next year. I thought I remember something like their payroll was over $100Mil when they won and then was something like $40Mil the next year and they were a little lack luster?
