Or, to avoid a tie, go to sudden death AFTER a full additional Quarter if the score remains tied.

Statistically, the team that gets the ball first wins 52% of the time.
I think it's fine the way it is.

And how would this be fair? The team that got the ball second would always have the advantage.

E.G. Team one gets the ball first, drives down the field but the drive stalls and they have to settle for a field goal.

Team 2 now gets the ball. Knowing that Team 1 scored a field goal, they know what they have to do to win, or at the very least tie the game. They will never punt the ball, or do anything less than score a field goal because to do so means losing. If team one scores a td, team two knows what they have to do, and so on.

No matter what, team two will always have the advantage, becasue they will always know what team one did first.

Re: NFL Overtime Rules

I've actually thought about an improvement to the OT rules for a while now. Here's my proposal to the NFL

If the team that gets the ball first scores a TD, the game is over. No chance for the other team. If you're D couldn't stop them, you lose. Get over it.

If the team that gets the ball first scores a FG, they kick off to the other team. If that team scores a TD, the game is over, or they can further extend the game by kicking a FG. If they kick a FG, the game becomes sudden death.

Thoughts?

Joel, team two still has the advantage, especially in the second example you give.

They aren't ever going to punt the ball once team one kicks a field goal.

That is why the winner of the coin toss for overtime always picks defense in the NCAA because you always want to know what you have to get/beat. Assuming they are tied after the first OT it then switches. It is luck of the draw who gets to choose, but so is the opening kick-off.

Far less advantage in the NCAA overtime rules as opposed to the NFL overtime rules, where you don't even get the chance to match.

I am assuming that number is correct, although I have heard it before and it sounds right.

I don't like the idea of jacking with NFL records either. You go KC Tiebreaker and you may as well throw out the record book and start over.

If a change HAD to be made, I would be ok with each team gets at least one possesion. That way each team has a chance.

Still, I hope it never changes.

Vic, team two doesn't have an advantage if team one scores a touchdown. The game would be over already. I think all teams would still elect to receive to have the chance to not let the other team get the ball. But if the D were able to stop them (even hold them to a FG) they'd still have a shot. See where I'm coming from?

Re: NFL Overtime Rules

College overtime. Or they could do something lame like kick field goals. Longest one wins.

but from the 40 or 50 yard line

the 25 is too close, even for college (I'd suggest the 40 for college and 50 for NFL)

Yeah, first tie since 2002. What a lame way to end a game.

Definitely!! Very lame to allow a tie in the NFL.

I like the college overtime set-up, however I also think each team should start at the 40 yd. line instead of the 25 which is too close. Especially with the range many NFL FG kickers have.

You're telling me. I am a Bengals fan, and I am not sure how to react to this.
