NFL Overtime Rules

Allright, I admit I'm writing this because of last nights' Pats - Jets game where the Pats made a GREAT comeback to score in the last second of the game and send it into overtime. Then, they lost they coin flip and the Jets marched down the field to kick a field goal and win.

My complaint, (other than the Pats losing) is that they never even got a chance to be on offense during the OT. Yes, I can hear all the naysayers now yaking about that is what a Defense is for, to stop the other team and get the ball back. You're right! However, a Sudden Death OT that never tests the defense of the team that happens to win the coin toss is not the right way to settle a football game.

I would have no problem with any system that allowed for both teams to have at least one chance on offense during the OT preiod before a winner was declared. I'm just not happy with the current state of affairs.

Re: NFL Overtime Rules

IMO I think they should play 1 extra 15 minute period and if it ends in a tie then the game goes down as a tie.

No ties, good Lord, that would be a mess. I'd settle for the college football overtime rule being implemented.

It sucks (for you) but rules are rules. Would you have posted this question if the Pats came out on top?

I think the NFL needs the college overtime rule.

Re: NFL Overtime Rules

About the college rule, I would personally rather see the NCAA adopt the sudden death than the other way around. I really dislike the college overtime in case you couldn't tell.

For the record, many folks including some Pats fans such as myself have not liked the sudden death rule since it was started for regular season games. I was all in favor of playing a complete fifth period and then allowing it to go into the record books as a tie. The way that baseball and basketball handles a tie seems superior to the way a tie is handled in football and hockey.

Probably would not have posted anything, but even at that, I think each team should get a shot on offense.

Re: NFL Overtime Rules

I think a hybrid fashion would be more appropriate. Have one more shortened quarter.. If still tied, then do a sudden death.

Or make me the field goal kickers to a shoot out (like hockey)

But the shootout comes after an overtime period.

Football seems to be the only sport where the OT practice comes into play. In my opinion, there is no way that the league can allow ties. The problem lies in the fact that the team who goes on defense may never get an opportunity to score. All other sports each team has an opportunity to score, even though hockey is "sudden death" each team has a chance to score.

Once an athlete gets to a high school, college or professional level, there should be no room for ties. There is no loser

Re: NFL Overtime Rules

I've got it, screw OT, just go with the XFL "kickoff" and have two players just haul ass for the ball. Whoever comes up with it wins. Was the XFL awesome or what?

Life isn't fair, but sports should be. A coin toss seems to determine a lot of overtime wins in the NFL.

Re: NFL Overtime Rules

A simple OT similar to College, similar to all of the levels of football ... Both teams get a shot from the 50, Play until there is a winner.
