Nascar

Im a big NASCAR fan and with the Datyona 500 comming up I was wondering who else likes NASCAR and who you will be pulling for in the big race. I will be pulling for Dale Earnhardt Jr. I used to pull for his father but after the wreck I cant do that any more, so it seemed only right to keep it in the family

Re: Nascar

I was a big Richard Petty fan back when they let them actually race, not this restrictor plate racing. Was going to pull for Adam Petty til his tragic death. That Kid would have been good. Now I pull for this guy:

Re: Nascar

My wife and I are BOTH big fans, and the coming weekend promises many cigars and libations!

The "sleeper" this year is supposed to be Bobby Labonte (from the Petty camp)... They brought some new crew and R&D talent aboard, and it should be interesting to see what they can do!!!

BTW... I wrote a training film for Chevy about 12 years ago... We shot it down in NC at Richard Childress Racing (then, the home of Dale Earnhardt). One of the guys on the crew whom I was most impressed with was a chassis man by the name of Kirk Shelmerdine... A very soft-spoken, but determined young man, and we're hoping to see him make his mark in the Nextel Cup this year!

Gentlemen... Start your engines!!!!

Great mechanic and crew chief, horrible driver. I live about 30 min from most of the race shops and I used to like Nascar till they started making up rules during and after races. Also, when they started these cookie cutter tracks, I don't watch anymore. Short track is where it's at.

I am with you on restrictor plate racing. Not very often do I find NASCAR to be that entertaining any more. When IRL can drive a short track 40 mph faster and not get a yellow flag really makes NASCAR drivers appear to be hacks, even though they are not.

F1, on the other hand, I am counting the days until Bahrain on March 12th!!! Schumacher's revenge...

Reigning champ - Senior Smoke - is my fav. Do have to say one thing about Busch, though. He was at least smart enough/lucky enough to get out of a Ford. Lucky for me, he went to a Dodge and not a Chevy

Re: Nascar

I've been a race fan since back in the 60's. The direction that Nascar has taken in the last several years has caused me to lose interest more and more with each passing year. Taking the Labor Day race away from Darlington was a sin in my eyes. And now that Rockngham is gone too, I'm really afraid that Martinsville may lose one of their dates in the near future. I use to live only an hour away from North Wilkesboro and attended all the races there. It was a sad, sad day when that track was shut down. I've been a Mark Martin fan for years now and if this is his last year(if Jack Roush will stop asking him to stay) I'm afraid that Sunday afternoons won't have anything to look forward to.

Re: Nascar

Ive never really been a nascar fan until Ive had several experiences with it. Before coming to college and rooming with my roomate the only race I would watch was the Daytona 500 and that was simply for the crashes. Now I watch it whenever he has it turned on. A few times Ive been to the Daytona International Speedway because my grandma has a house 15 min away and she took my family on a tour of it twice. This past January I was visiting her for a week and nascar was doing testing. I was able to stand 5 feet away from the track as 8 or so of them drafted and it was the coolest fu*king thing I have seen in a long time. The sound was amazing and seeing the speed was amazing. I have a new appreciation for nascar now.

I had a similar experience. I spent a lot of weekends at Riverside In'tl Raceway and Ontario Motor Speedway as a kid watching road races. I live 10 minutes from Pomona where the NHRA drags are held twice a year. I wasn't a fan and didn't get the whole Nascar thing until I went to a race at the California Speedway.

To see 30+ basically detroit production shaped sedans go by at 200mph all about less than 6" apart front to back and side to side will take your breath away!!!

You have to see it live to appreciate what I'm talking about.

RAD,

Maybe he's a "horrible driver"... Dale Sr. was the same for 7 years.

Just saying that Shelmerdine's a nice guy....

Since you don't watch anymore, I'll try to keep you posted now and again!

Onward and forward!
