This kid's an ace machine: Two in one week

Nine-year-old Brandon Shulman made two hole-in-ones at Sugarloaf Country Club when he was only 5. Since then, he's won more than 20 junior titles.

Pro golfers playing the BellSouth Classic this week might want to get some tips from a 9-year-old kid who long ago brought portions of the TPC Sugarloaf course to its knees.

According to Golf Digest, the odds of making a hole-in-one are 5,000 to 1 on any given round. Brandon Shulman made two in one week. When he was 5.

On an August afternoon four years ago, Brandon knocked in a 6-iron from 100 yards out on the 11th hole on the Meadows Course at Sugarloaf. Exactly one week later, he holed a driver from 107 yards out on the second hole of the Stadium Course en route to winning a junior tournament.

"My jaw dropped," said Brandon, now a 9-year-old third grader at Mason Elementary. "It was so awesome."

A plaque outside the Sugarloaf clubhouse grill commemorates Brandon's double feat.

Some records show Brandon as the youngest golfer to record an ace, breaking England's Matthew Draper's 1997 mark. Matthew had a hole-in-one when he was 5 years and 212 days, according to 4to40.com, a Web site that tracks age-related records. Brandon was 5 years, 159 days when made his first ace.

Along with two closets full of tournament trophies, both balls now sit in a pair of plaques at the Shulmans' house, which is adjacent to ninth tee box. Despite his success, Brandon says his hole-in-ones were "all luck." Yet, he's displayed plenty of skill.

He's won more than 20 junior tournaments, including one in Las Vegas during which he drove every green.

"No. 18 was a 225-yard, par-5," remembered his proud father, T.J. Shulman, "and he hit the stick with his tee shot."

He's also won the closest-to-the-hole contest on the virtual golf machine at the BellSouth Classic.

Yet, he doesn't believe another hole-in-one is in his future. Golf's not even his favorite sport.

He's a gritty left defenseman on the Ice Pilots state championship hockey team at the IceForum in Duluth. He defeated former teammate Reagan Cink, son of PGA Tour member and fellow Sugarloaf resident Stewart Cink, in the championship game.

"He likes hockey so much," said T.J. Shulman, "but he's 10-times better at golf."

"There's more action in hockey," Brandon added.

But his passion for golf is evident when he practices, said his dad.

"He'll stay out there until his hands are bleeding," T.J. said. "He wants to keep hitting until he hits it perfect."

I hate stories like this...
I have been playing golf for over 36 years. Thousands of rounds of golf and I have never had a hole in one. Close a few times. Maybe 100 eagles, all on par 5s. Crap! Were are my clubs?? Time to keep trying...

Short par 4 or long par 3. Not a par 5 by any means. I have had two in my life. Both in the same year.

Yeah, Ice . . . that doesn't sound right . . . but for a 9 y/o to hit the flag on a tee shot, is pretty nifty . . .
