NHL Rookie of the year is
Calder Memorial Trophy (Rookie of the year)
Just came from the Pens game. Sid the kid is amazing but I think Alexander Ovechkin will get if over Sidney Crosby. Now being a Pens fan I am bias but here goes: Crosby: * only 18 - youngest to 100 points * terrible team - 58 pts * better playmaker * plays defense Ovechkin: * better goal scorer * 1st in league - 415 shots on goal/2nd in league 363/Crosby 271 * terrible team - 68 pts Any NHL fans care to comment? Who will get it?

Re: NHL Rookie of the year is
I'm a bit biased because Im canadian, but I still have to go with Ovechkin. He had the better overall year, but I think Crosby will have a better career. He plays better in both ends of the rink and because of his better playmaking abilities, he makes his linemates more of a scoring threat. Other teams can't just key in on Crosby like they do with Ovechkin.
Also, an arguement could be made for Dion Phaneuf in Calgary. He is only around 19 and had a very solid year playing defense, which is a much harder position to play than forward. He is dangerous on the powerplay, makes some huge hits and isnt a liability in his own end of the rink. |

Re: NHL Rookie of the year is
Not not so sure about Crosby being a more complete player. Ovechkin plays hard every night when he is the only threat on his team. They've been keying on him since the first month of the season. He hits people, and can take a hit. Skates really well and is a pure goal scorer. Not to mention throwing up 53 assists. Not many snipers in the league that aren't named Jagr, are putting up that many helpers. If Ovechkin isn't the ROY then better check the PA postmarks on the ballots.

Crosby
Youngest player ever to amass 100 points in the NHL. Enough to get my vote.
