Question to All Golfers: GPS or Rangefinder

Hey Everyone,

I am trying to find some feedback and opinions on what golfers on the forum find useful as a tool for their game...either a GPS or Rangefinder.

I currently do not have either but interested in a purchase. I am the type of person that walks 75% of my rounds and really likes to walk off yardage and bascially guesstimate pin yardage by the placement (front, middle, back). Played in El Paso this week with a friend and we swore by a Bushnell Rangefinder (not sure what model). He is a solid low handicapper and said it was one of the most important tools in his bag.

I looked on the Golfsmith Website at the different types. I have not yet read the reviews on there yet but will be soon. Just wanted to see what feedback anyone here has on any model compared to another. Also which, a GPS or Rangefinder, do you feel is better.

I appreciate the responses!

Thanks...

Ty

Re: Question to All Golfers: GPS or Rangefinder

i walk everywhere i am alowd to. i only ride a cart when forced, or playing with certain people, which is rare.
i got a rangefinder several years ago for a present. i could not use it. hands have to be really steady to use them i guess. i only used it maybe 3 times.

i have had a skycaddie, skygolf.com, for 2 years now. i can honestly say i will never be without one again. it is easy to use, update courses and rechargable. i can't say anythign about other brands, but i think most are similar now, just using different companies GPS services.

i highly recommend something if you are a walker especially. i know a couple people that have bought them after using mine.
good luck

i use a rangefinder that was gifted to me, it works fine for its use. i dont golf enough (10-20) rounds a year to invest in a gps. the only downside i have heard of to a gps is that they dont have every course so you need to check if your local coures will be offered on it.

I have a Skycaddie SG2. They thing that I like about it is the "other" stuff that you can get distances to/from (ie. bunkers, landing areas, etc.). I have played a couple of courses that rent laser rangefinders and they were only effective on the pin and you had to hit a specific area on the pin to get the reflection. I am not sure if that is a common thing with all rangefinders or not.

Rborrell,
That is a good point. Being able to mark all distances on the hole would be very important. knowing the distances to pin is obvious but know distance on carrying a bunker would be tremendous help.
