Trying to enjoy Baseball

I'm trying to enjoy MLB baseball.... someone help me here.

Why cant I seem to enjoy baseball, as a kid I played several years of orginized ball... I used to watch the Reds.. I remember Johnny Bench and the Big Red machine, But as an adult I seem to have lost interest. Steriods in Baseball, huh they still play baseball??

I think it has to do with the pace of the game, 3 up 3 down.... pop fly he's out, thrown out at first... those three statements would cover probably 90% of the plays.

Okay you die-hard Baseball fans.... what am I missing, I want action at least a little.

by the way, I also think Hockey would be a lot better to watch if the goal was widen about a foot.... and golf lets make the hole bigger, olympic diving make the pool shallower... I want excitment in sports.........whew Im threw now, Thank Ya' for listening to my vent.

Maybe try rooting for another team? I dont think I'd like baseball either if I had to watch them for 162 games.

The strikes killed baseball for me. I started to get back into baseball the last couple of years playing fantasy baseball but alas I'm not playing it this year and I am already starting to lose track of the season.

Pete Rose, and Marg Schott sort of took the fun out of rooting for the Reds a long time ago..
Believe me the team I'm rooting for has nothing to with the fact that the sport bores me. I wish I could enjoy it, Im trying.. 162 games no wonder, too many games sheesh.

how about a no hitter, now thats alot fun to watch 3 hours of a pitcher playing catch with the catcher.... I understand the difficulty in pitching a perfect game but from a spectators view, come on... The sport needs help.

It's kind of like watching golf, it's no fun until someone makes a mistake.

Re: Trying to enjoy Baseball

I love baseball. I think that its the art of the game that makes it most enjoyable for me. To be a baseball player is one of the hardest profession in athletics one can be. This is because of the various skills one needs: they need to run fast from distances ranging from 90ft to 270ft, they need to throw a ball with pin point accuracy from over 300 ft away (for outfielders), and they need to hit the ball with a bat thats only a little bit wider than the ball itself when the ball is coming at them at over 90 miles an hour (and thats just a fastball, try hitting a curve or a knuckle ball). It takes so many skills to succeed, without even mentioning the mental strategies. Most other athletes have much more specific jobs. So, its skill that is needed that makes the game so entertaining to me.

Re: Trying to enjoy Baseball

One of my distinct pleasures on a warm summer evening is to retire to the screenhouse out back with a good cigar, an adult beverage and the Sox on the TV. No worries, no stress, listening to RemDawg laugh about nothing and enjoying the moment. I love it!

Re: Trying to enjoy Baseball

Baseball is definately one of those love it or hate it sports. I for one love it. There is nothing better than sitting down with a cold one and watching a game. I must admit that I have a difficult time watching any National League games as I am an American League (Blue Jays) fan. I just don't follow the National League and therefore am less interested in it. Although I do watch the odd Dodgers game simply cause of Vin Scully. In my mind the greatest braodcaster in MLB history.

The broadcasters makes up for at least 75% of the game. Watching a game with crappy announcers is like watching paint dry.

Too True! Actually I usually have to mute the annoying idiots.

Not Vinny of course. I was lucky enough to grow up listening to him on the radio n TV. What a Guy! Always well prepared and always a consumate professional!

Say DGar, howz about giving this a try;

You with your favorite bev that is well paired with a top shelf gar. In a comfy recliner.

Watch a game that has teams in it that can actually hit and think about what pitch you would call for next in the count.
Where would you want your pitcher to locate it?
Think like a pitcher now... Or would you throw a pitch that is not a strike to set up the batter to be unprepared for the next pitch that is a strike?
Don't forget to change speeds and move the ball around Mr. Manager.

If there is a runner, would you send him on whatever the count is at this point?
What kind of a hitter is at the plate? Contact or power?
Would you have given the batter a take sign?
Who will you have cover second? Why that will depend on your next pitch location that will depend on the previous pitch and it's location...
Would you hit and run? Do you double steal? On the fly ball out, is it deep enough to send your runner(s)?

Should this pitcher be yanked now? Or should we try to get a bit more out of him for the sake of the bullpen in tomorrows game?

Even better, watch it with a bud and compare guesses.

Work on your best Umpire voice (with gravel) and yell "SSSSTIR-RIKE!"
Speaking of the ump, does this one have a normal strike zone? Or a wide one? Is he consistant? Does he need to be shot?

Think like a hitter and try to adjust your strike zone to his. Should I swing at this pitch?

Since you used to play I know you can do it if you want to.

I belive that this sort of approach to viewing is where the joy can be found.

As Yogi Berra used to say;

"Half this game is 90% mental!"

Is is of course entirely possible that your enjoyment of baseball is at an end and gone forever. If that is the case, then all players and fans should mourn the loss.

If that is the case then I hope you can find great joy in something else. Thus endith the big winded spew.

Best wishes and much joy to you Bro! *Sincerely, Dafiddla

Re: Trying to enjoy Baseball

Thanks for all the replys..

I actually watched a little basrball this weekend, hated the Cubs and Cards got rained out last night... that was on my list too watch.

How about that 1.5 billion dollar home run hitting park the Yankees have built.

Heres one for ya... Yesterday Manny the 20 million dollar west coast baby/outfielder lets a pop fly ball drop at his feet... for the kinda jack this guys making a little effort would have been nice to see.. I would chewed his over paid ear off if I was the coach....

Okay this week I'll be watching the Yanks and R.Soxs.....

Re: Trying to enjoy Baseball

I feel the same way. When I was younger I played baseball for the local park and I collect numerous cards. I even went to an Oakland Athletes game. Jose Canseco and Mark Mcgwire were my favorite. I just can't get into it either anymore. IMO it is so boring to watch on TV. Even with my new HD TV just last night I tried to watch it and still got nothing. What I do LOVE to watch is UFC, Boxing and US Football!!!

Re: Trying to enjoy Baseball

Take a look at the best rivelry in all of sports when the Sox and Yankees face off in a 3 game series this weekend. They currently have the same records and for interesting baseball, it just doesn't get any better than this.
