Edmonton Oilers

Okay gang, San Jose is against the wall and the Oilers are poised to put them away.

I think the Oil will do it and advance to the Western Conference Finals. Edmonton has been amazing! Clutch goal after goal, in all possible ways. Man, if they hadn't won that triple overtime thriller, they would be goners, but they did win.

How about an 8 seed winning the Stanley Cup? How wild would that be?

I know the Pens did it in '91, not sure if it's been done since. The Oilers have amazing team speed and will have a great shot at the Finals...they would be a great match for either Buffalo or Carolina, so I'm rooting for them to squash the Ducks (apolgies to all our SoCal friends!))

I wouldn't count the sharks out yet. I think the sharks will win tomorrow's game and the Edmonton will the 7th game in OT. All the pre-game booing tomorrow should fire up the Sharks and embarrass the Oilers enough to slow them down a tad. Its hard to play hockey when your hanging your head in shame, just ask the Sharks!

That's my prediction. Oilers in 7.

What are you referring to when you say the Pens did it in '91? The Pens finished 1st in their division that season. The North Stars, whom the Pens beat in the Finals, had a losing record during the regular season that year, yet made it to the Finals! The North Stars were hot the final two months and they managed to take their momentum into the playoffs as they defeated the Chicago Blackhawks and Edmonton Oilers, to face a Mario Lemieux led Pittsburg Penguins squad. The Penguins went on to win that series and the Stanley Cup in six games, handily beating the North Stars 8-0 in the final tilt.

What a season the 1990-91 one was! It was "Badger" Bob Johnson's crowning jewell as he led the Pens to the Cup. Alas, he died the following year... He was a great coach and a great man!

Re: Edmonton Oilers

My bad, I guess it was the North Stars that just went to the Finals as an 8th seed. Mario Lepew and his mates then swept my Blackhawks the following year to repeat....Bastages!

Now the question is: When (or will they ever?!?!) will the Hawks win the Cup again. Man, it is getting to be like the Rangers!

Living in Colorado, my team is the Avs. Nothing like having a ready made Stanley Cup Champion dropped on your lap!

Speaking of the Pens, I have read rumors that they are going to move to either Winnipeg or Hamilton. Too bad for Pittsburgh, but great for these hockey loving cities!

Re: Edmonton Oilers

I think the Oilers will finish them off tonite. They are on too much of a roll and Roloson is playing really well and they are getting balanced scoring. As for other 8th seeded teams going to the finals, I think Carolina did it a few years back and so did Washington.

I'm pulling for the Oil to put them away tonight, but I'm a wee bit nervous about it. San Jose is a very good team.

In 1997-98, when Washington went to the Finals, they were the 4th seed in the NHL Eastern Conference. During the 2001-2002 season, the year the 'Canes went to the Finals, Carolina won the Southeast Division and was seeded third in the East, despite having the 7th best record.

Re: Edmonton Oilers

Oilers v. Ducks baby!! Should be a good one...I'll take the Oilers again, in 6 again.

By the way, kudos to the Oilers fans at Game 6. Before Game 5, classless Sharks fans booed the Canadien National Anthem loudly. The Oilers fans were asked to be on their best behavior, but they drowned out the Star Spangled Banner...by cheering! Another reason I like our friends North of the Border..some great people up there, hey stormin and miki and other friends! Here's to you:

O Canada!
Our home and native land!
True patriot love in all thy sons command.

With glowing hearts we see thee rise,
The True North strong and free!

From far and wide,
O Canada, we stand on guard for thee.

God keep our land glorious and free!
O Canada, we stand on guard for thee.

O Canada, we stand on guard for thee.

Love the Oilers being in the Western Conference Final! I heard on OLN last night that Edmonton is the first 8th seed to make it to the conference final in the current playoff format.

I will be pulling for the Oil against the Ducks. Having watched the Ducks sweep out my Avalanche, I realize they are pretty good, but I still think Edmonton can beat them.

True, though the current format isn't that old. I much prefered the old Conferences (Smthye and Campbell), and having the 1 v 4 and 2 v 3 matchups from the old divisions...the Norris Division, Baby!! The seeding teams by conference has been part of the decline of rivalries, and intensity, in the NHL!

That being said, I am rooting for the Oilers too, and am looking forward to the Sabres / Hurricanes series as well.

Yah I remember that. The way I remember things going down was that the Blackhawks owner petitioned the league for changes because he was tired of losing to the Maple Leafs.

Go Sabres!
