Ferrari F1 driver in induced coma after debris hits helmet @ 170 mph...

In qualifying at the Hungaroring for the GP of Hungary, a spring from the BrawnGP car of Rubens Barrichello bounced on the track and struck Felipe Massa in the helmet at 170 mph.He was immediately knocked unconscious and hit the tire wall heavily. He was airlifted from the track, and underwent emergency surgery in the hospital. He is very heavily sedated, and brain tests will be administered tomorrow. Last report, he was in serious but satisfactory condition. Our hearts and prayers go out to Felipe and his family. YouTube - Felipe Massa Accident 7/25/09 Skull Base Fracture -Breaking News-

He is not in coma, whats wrong info you got! Whats picture they took before they pulled him out (don't look if you nerve system is weak!!!) http://img.mtv3.fi/mn_kuvat/mtv3/urh...009/755343.jpg

But its not so bad as it was for youngster from Formula 2 last week!
YouTube - Henry Surtees Fatal Formula 2 Crash 19/07/09

He was going 120mph around, then the guy in front of him lost control, and hitted side wall, and the wheel bounced into race track, and struck Henry right in helmet, he passed out, kept on going until hit a safety wall and stopped! Was taken to hospital were he later died! he was only 18, and he was one of the best youngsters around who had a bright future in F1! Masa hitted tire wall on same speed, 108mph, but he was going like you said 170mph then spring struck him, which weighted half pound! but on impact of speed, probably it was 80 pounds! Luckily hes a live, and not in coma!!!!

He is in a medically induced coma right now. The doctors will bring him out of it when they feel it is okay. Massa was clearly NOT in a coma from the accident. While on the strretcher his arms were moving, and he was speaking...

If you know anything about power and ballistics, it is not as much the weight of an object, but the speed in which it is travelling that determins the 'power' in which it contains. A pebble moving at 17,500 mph can destroy a Space Sahuttle.

A 5 ton boulder moving at 10MPH could also destroy a space shuttle. In the most basic sense, force is the product of mass and velocity. They are both equally important. A light, fast moving object can certainly act with great force upon impact with another object, but not as much as a heavy object moving at the same speed.

Unfortunately this kind of thing happens with some regularity (every few years it seems) in F1.
Driving that fast, that exposed, is likely to end badly. Scary scenes. Not as bad as the Gilles Villeneuve accident (I will never be able to unsee that one) years back, but scary all the same.

I saw that too, very bizarre...

I hope it doesn't end Felipe Massa's career. I am not a fan of his but he is very well known and respected driver...

The F1 GP races are the only ones I really enjoy watching...

My hopes are to travel this year and attend one before October...

And Schumacher(!) is coming out of retirement to take his place. I just became actively interested in F1 for the first time in a long time.

I heard from a friend that Schummi will not be returning due to a neck injury that he had earlier that isn't getting better. Man, I can't imagine the kind of wear and tear F-1 racing imparts on the body! Anyway, 7:30 EST is the Spa, Belgium race for anyone interested in watching.

Yeah, he got that injury while testing the motogp Bike in Spain in April I think! But they said other year he might make hes debut, Since couple team want to leave F1 Ferrari is voting for 3 Formula per team, in that case they would give one seat for Schumacher! But they most likely will Sign Alosno, and pay out Kimi, because Kimi is heading to WRC, for Fiat next year, Thats not 100% confirmed, but it's happening!
And that king of Impact F-1 has on a body! Space shuttle makes 3g's during laucnh, F-1 cars have been ovver 6.5-7 g's these days, on heavy breaking, and high speed corner 130mph I mean! Whats a reason their necks are the weakest part, and they work very hard to buld muscles on it!

Ah! Great info Egis! I am really interested to see how Raikonnen does in WRC. That's a whole different ball game! I really have always wondered how a rally driver would do in f-1, f-1 in rally, and nascar driver in either as well. It will be interesting to find out! I mean, F-1 vs WRC aside, road-racing versus rally is a very huge transition! anyway, this is completely OT lol.
