There is no way that the game should be decided by penalty kicks. THey should keep playing untill some scores.

Well, I reckon the italian got what he deserved... looked like he was trying to butthump Zidane in the area, and probably said something specifically provoking, and got more than he expected.

From what I read on the BBC sport news pages, the Italian's dad pretty much admitted that his son provokes people into attacking him. Unless I read it wrong.

But having said that, Zidane should be experienced enough to know he shouldn't headbutt people, as should anyone playing football at in international level. But then they should know not to dive, too....

While nothing can justify head butting someone on the field, the Italians are well known for dirty play. The number of fouls they committed during the game that resulted in free kicks and other oppurtunities for France was sick. At times it looked like the Italians were playing Greco-Roman wrestling instead of soccer. Trash talk and dirty play have no place in sports.

What a sad way for one of the beset players to end their career with.

The Italian tweaked his nipple if you watch the clip just before which would royally p*ss me off lol! I dont think it was that bad tbh-it was pretty funny at the end of the day. Hed played a blinder of a game, had scored a penlty in the world cup final, had taken his team to the final and there wasnt much left for him to do really except an act of near farsical violence. IMHO it was a classic-the Italian was annoying him and it didnt really hurt the guy so it was more a symbol of how annoyed Zidane go. Made me laugh more than it shocked me and it butched up a game thats going way too girlie [Ronaldo were looking at you].

My thoughts exactly! How can a championship game be decided on penalty kicks? Keep playing till someone scores. Funny thing was that night an MLB game went 19 innings. Go figure.

Opus hit on the point - that headbutt didn't hurt a bit. It was an acting job to amplify the stupid thing Zidane did and thereby got him ejected.
Anybody play highschool/college/organized basketball. Ever take a charge? Well you always make it look worse than it was. There is always some theatrics in sports to influence the ref/ump.
I was recruited to play baseball in college, but the academics where I went were too demanding so I never got the collegiate athletic experience. But in High School and Legion ball I was a catcher and as long as the ump let me I would talk to the hitters - just like the Italian was talking to Zidane. Always trying to get into their heads and a little under their skin so they weren't thinking about hitting. I wouldn't be nasty about it, but I didn't want them thinking about the next pitch or the game. And if the ump stopped me sometimes I would walk from the batters box with hitters to say something to get in their heads.
Zidane getting caught headbutting after "getting pinched" follows classic highschool basketball results on player contact. Always be the first guy to throw the elbow underneath, because the other guy is just going to elbow you back harder which is more visible to the ref and he'll get called for the foul.
That Italian may have won the game. Who was gone for the remainder of the game and unavailable for any penalty kicks? You guessed it, France's best player - Zidane.

The reason this sport will never be popular in the USA is because you are rewarded for taking a dive and being a total sissy with a penalty kick.

However, with Zidane being French, I didn't think he had a head butt in him. So in a sick way I liked it. If he acted like the majority Frenchies he would have let the Italian walk all over him and then bitch about it later.

I can understand the earlier rounds going to penaltyy kicks, but not in the finals. Give them some more subs and let them play it til someone scores.
