Wrestling

I know I am going to get some WWE replies out of this but that is not what I am looking for.

Is anyone a former or current high school or college wrestler, coach or wrestling coach.

I have been coaching wrestling for 12 years now and am the commissioner of a wrestling league.

http://www.smjwl.org

Just curious if there are any others out there.

Ha. All this time and I never realized that you were Vince McMahon. j/k

I prefer Olympic wrestling to that WWE freak show. Although I have enjoyed a match or two of WWE.

I knew that was coming.

Olymic = freestyle and greco
High school and College = folkstyle

They are both similar and it is good to learn all 3 styles

History of SOMBO Wrestling

Sombo (also spelled Sambo, Somba or Cambo) is an acronym for the Russian phrase "self-defense without weapons" (Som-oborona Bes Orusyia). As its name implies, it is a self-defense oriented style of jacket wrestling which incorporates techniques from both JUDO and freestyle/Greco-Roman wrestling. It originated in the Soviet Union (Russia) officially in 1939 as a form of hand-to-hand combat for soldiers, but its roots go back to ancient times. There are similar forms of jacket wrestling in the Canary Islands off the coast of Spain and also in the Cumberland-Westmoreland region of England. Currently, the former Soviet Block countries, Spain, France and the English field strong international SOMBO teams.

It's a really good sport. I haven't trained in about a year (coached graduated and moved) and the nearest dojo is about an hour and fifteen minutes away. but we were incorporating some Sambo into our workouts and the stuff is really affective. I like the fact that they get to use shoes on the mat you don't know how many times I have twisted the ankles because you cannot wear wrestling shoes on the judo mats.

Re: Wrestling

I did high school wrestling and freestyle - blew my knee as a junior...setback, rehab, then got back into it....blew the other knee.
Loved to roll so I learned a little judo and then learned juijitsu before the big mma explosion. I've met Pat Burris, Frank Sham, Randy Couture, and Dan Hendo when they did training videos down here. Met Jens and Pat Miletich too. Frank was by far the more interesting one.
Met Mike Swain...watching that guy roll was INSANE.

Have you ever run into Cary Kolat? He was in the MMA thing for a while. He runs his own wrestling school here in Maryland now.
