Re: Golf anyone?
You cant go wrong with Titleist, Calloway or Taylor Made. If you were looking for a cheap set you could try a brand called Knight, they run like 300 bucks for a set PW-3 iron.

Re: Golf anyone?
Tommy Armour 845's. A great beginner set. You can also put together a set from ebay with selective shopping. Also, since you are just beginning, a set from Wal-mart or a store like that will work great for learning the game. After you get the feel for golf and want to continue, then I would suggest upgrading. Look for over-sized club heads.
If you want to start off using high-end clubs, I suggest www.callawaygolfpreowned.com Good luck, it's a great game! It can take some time to learn so don't be impatient and keep hitting them. Lessons may not be a bad idea to give you a rundown on all the basics. NCRM |

Re: Golf anyone?
If you're getting started and want good stuff that you wont have to upgrade from in a couple years, buy Callaway. They're the most forgiving clubs out there-- the easiest to hit. This is especially true when it comes to drivers and fairway woods.

Re: Golf anyone?
Sometimes you can find great deals on used clubs at your local pro shop.

Re: Golf anyone?
Agree 100%. Had a set of these myself while in high school. Moved up to a set of Tommy Armour V-31 in college, which i still hit today.
As for woods, look for 2-3 year old models on ebay. Drivers that originally sold for $300+ 2-3 years ago can now be had for $50. Lastly, pick a good putter. It is the most frequently used club in the bag and the one that can save you (or cost you) the most strokes throughout the round. Ping Anser, Odyssey Dual Force, Carbite, and Odyssey White Hot are all good putters that can be had at a reasonable price. For more information, you can go to golfreview.com for reviews on almost everything golf. It's the equivalent of top25cigar.com.

Absolutely agree about the putter. Take your time and find a good one. Most golf store will have a little putting green where you can test out the putters and some will even fit you with the right size putter.

Re: Golf anyone?
I'd say the best clubs to start out with are ones you find that are comfortable and sized right for you. Take a few swings with some and see how they feel. Doesn't really matter what brand of clubs for now, you'll figure out what you like as you go.

Re: Golf anyone?
Most good golf pro shops will have demo clubs where you can try before you buy. If you are unsure if you will be sticking to this game, I would probably look at a decent used set. Golf clubs don't hold their value well, so you can find a year old set of clubs for almost half the price as a new set.
That being said, when I started out, I spent $1400 on a full set of Taylor Made clubs and have been using them for 4 years. Out of my golfing buddies, 2 of us use Taylor Made, 1 swears by Cleaveland, and the other has Ping.

Re: Golf anyone?
Golfing is like cigars. Very addicting.
You can buy cheap equipment, mediocore equipment, and the best of equipment. I would start with a pair of clubs that is in your price range. I suggest Wilson, Titliest, Cobra or even Callaway. Buy them at a pro-shop and let them size you. It will make a big difference. Even to a novice golfer. Practice, practice and practice is what makes you better in this game. Not the equipment. Just practice. Golf= another excuse to smoke cigars. Have fun on the lynx !!!

Re: Golf anyone?
I pieced together a full set from eBay and it only cost me about $150, you have to be careful and make sure the clubs will be right for you. The irons I bought were all a 1/2 inch too short for me so I'm going to have to but a new set sometime soon.

E-bay is the place to shop for the beginner and veteran player both. You should start out by getting a fitting at a local proshop. If you start with the right sized clubs, you'll have an easier time learning to hit what you have, and like what you hit!! Good luck in the search for clubs. And I hope you hit them long and straight!! |
