why the ACC is so bad...

I know there's a lot of ACC fans here, but why does our conference suck so much? The SEC has an excuse (so many good teams this year that they beat up on one another), but the ACC is inexcusably terrible this year...

we're like the big least only more worthless...

our best teams are beaten by teams that lost to akron...

there isn't any hope for the ACC this year is there?

I assume you are a VPI fan. If that is the case, you should be very thankful to have a competitive team evry year. My team may be in the SEC but for the past 6 years have sucked beyond imagination. Football season just isn't the same when you KNOW your team has no chance of winning 10 of the 12 games it plays.

I don't worry about how the "conference" does. Most conferences consist of 1-3 good teams and a bunch of wannabes anyway. Been that way for a long, long time.

The SEC used to be Alabama and one or two of the LSU/Auburn/Georgia/Florida group. Now, temporarily anyway, there are several good teams in the SEC

The Big 10 traditionally consisted of the Big 2 - Michigan and Ohio State - and everybody else. The Pac 10 was USC and one other that changed from time to time, plus everybody else.

The old Big 8, now Big 12, had Oklahoma and Nebraska and, once in a while, somebody else. The old SW Conference had Texas and Texas A&M and everybody else. For a while the ACC had FSU and everybody else. Now all of that's changed.

Its all about parity and scholarship restrictions and the fact that the rest of the world finally learned the lesson taught them by Miami and FSU in the 80s and 90s ... speed kills.

Is the ACC bad or can it now be said, as the SEC has said for years, that the teams beat each other up? Does it matter? Most of us are not fans of a conference but of a team.

I've been an FSU fan since 1961 when I heard my first game on the radio as a 13 year old kid and was attracted to the whole "Indian" thing. Went to school there when we were a decent team but at a lower level. I suffered through the early 70s (0-11 in 1973) when we were the team everyone else wanted to play for Homecoming. The came Bobby and we suddenly found ourselves on top of the world. It was a great run while it lasted. Now that's over too. But, win or lose, I'm a Nole.

Frankly, I don't really care about the ACC per se. I don't root for or against teams based on conference membership. There are a few other teams I like but they come from different parts of the country and are in different conferences and I like them for a variety of reasons. Ditto with a few teams I don't like.

I guess this is a long-winded way of saying I don't get all the fuss about which "conference" is strongest or best. I want my TEAM to be strongest and best. Isn't that what matters?

The landscape of college basketball may be changing a little as well. The ACC has undoubtedly been the best basketball conference for many years.

A look back at last years tournament shows that the SEC is fielding a very competitive group as well.

NCAA Tournament:

SEC: 6 Tournament Teams
2 Final Four Teams
1 National Champion
1 NIT Champion Team

ACC: 4 Tournament Teams
0 Final Four Teams

I still say the ACC is better top to bottom, but the SEC is not just a football conference any more.

You need to stop listening to the national media and put away the SEC Kool Aid.

The SEC has a handful of good teams at the top: Auburn, LSU, Florida, and Tennessee. The rest are also-rans who are no better than the average ACC
team. UGA is going to quickly drop back to the pack there because their offense
is no better than FSU or Miami's. Ole Miss got skunked 27-3 by Wake Forest!
Mississippi State took three games to score a touchdown! Alabama lost to
a woeful Arkansas team that has given up over 100 pts to Southern Cal in
their last two meetings. Kentucky and Vandy suck annually.

The ACC is down, no argument there. Its mainly because the perceived top
three teams of Miami, FSU, and VT are struggling offensively in a league that
has recently shifted from an offensive league to a defensive league.

Clemson is gonna STOMP South Carolina.
Georgia Tech will be favored over UGA.
FSU will probably roll over for Florida.
Wake Forest already POUNDED Ole Miss...using a backup QB.

Also...don't forget that the ACC recently set a new record for the number of conference players
drafted in the 1st round of the NFL draft. Alot of underclassmen went early. So alot of teams
are playing youth in critical positions.

FSU better get a lot better between now and the end of November if they are going to "roll" over Florida.

Teams across the country are having underclassment declare for the draft. That is an issue that everyone is facing, not just the ACC.

Sadly, I must agree. Right now, FSU isn't a lock to roll over Wake Forest, much less Florida.

We "should" have won both the Clemson and NC State games. Had them both won and let them slip away. That's because Clemson and NC State both out-FSU'd FSU. They did what we used to do in terms of cranking up the offense at will and they simply steamrollered our defense when they had to.

When it comes to college basketball the ACC rules. That being said, I think you are correct, some other leagues are coming around in recent years. I have been following ACC since David Thompson played for NC State back in the 70's (in fact about the same time I became a life long Skins Fan as well).

I would have to say that the ACC has been the most consistent winning league in college basketball. You can always count on UNC or DUKE to win games.

I went to Chowan College in NC (non acc team of course) but my father and sister graduated from UNC and my brother-in-law got is graduate degree from NC State. When my nephew was little his first words were "BEAT DUKE".

I don't think it's a weak conference at all. Competitive with eachother and, traditionally, taking on decent non-conference opponents it's not a bad conference to watch. The NFL seems to think there are some pretty good players in it.

Being a looong time FSU fan, I got spoiled during the 14 year streak of top 4 finishes. While I don't enjoy watching them lose, I realize that most college teams that have decent schedules consider 2 to 3 loses a successful year. I'll wait until they are dominant again.. I'm patient.

ACC = Basketball? Maybe at Duke, where they consistently suck at football. But I'm not the best to comment on this since I pay no attention to a bunch of tall guys that run for 20 feet, elbow eachother in the shoulders and then talk about how demanding and physical their sport is. SEC fans are welcome to it.

Nope, I don't think there is any debate to the fact that the ACC has been a consistent power house in college basketball since the 70's. Duke, UNC, WF, NC State, UVA, MD, and even GA Tech has had it's good times.
