Re: Beckam To The US
It will be a step in the right direction, but until the MLS obtains a Euro in his prime, I do not think you can say it has achieved "mainstream".

Coach says Beckham won't play for Real Madrid again Associated Press MADRID, Spain - David Beckham won't play again for Real Madrid after announcing his departure at the end of the season for the Los Angeles Galaxy of the MLS, coach Fabio Capello said Saturday. "He is not going to play any more. He will practice, but he is not going to play," Capello said at a news conference. Beckham announced this week he will not extend his contract with Real Madrid when it expires in June and is instead leaving for the Galaxy and a five-year deal. "The player's decision is to go to Los Angeles. He has always been a great professional, but a player who has such a major contract with another team ... we cannot count on him," Capello said. "I think one cannot have the same drive if one is already with another team."

Re: Beckam To The US
I think that the MLS will have a lil blurp of attention....but once the novelty of Beckam being in the US wears off in a few months or so..... It will prolly fall back down. Definitely isn't bad for the sport though.

Re: Beckam To The US
The only reason Beckham is more famous than Ryan Giggs is that Wales aren't a decent force in international football and Becks is married to Posh.
Ryan Giggs is twice the player David Beckham is.

Re: Beckam To The US
He is a great athlete.
They are making him out to be a movie star more than an athlete. It will take more than him to bring it to the main stream.

Re: Beckam To The US
i'm not seeing a huge impact but if he does well and other players like figo, ronaldo, and others who has interest in US eventually come hopefully this is propel MLS. NOt only with people become more itnerested but also US players will not be so eager to leave MLS

Re: Beckam To The US
It would be nice to see soccer more mainstream in the US, but i doubt this move will make a drastic change. Maybe in a couple more years soccer will be at least as mainstream as poker lol.

Re: Beckam To The US
We as Americans have to learn to accept the fact that football(soccer) will never be the number one sport of this nation . We've got the NFL , MLB , NBA and NHL . We can't have the best of every league sport . I do enjoy watching the World Cup and the International games of football(soccer) but there is way to much diving going on for the average American fan . Diving has become a problem in the NHL and now the League can't get a paid contract for national coverage on a major television network .

Re: Beckam To The US
He basically will be. This guy is past his prime, and I believe will be seen meddling around LA quite frequently. His face will be one of the most famous ones shown in the media for the next five years, IMO. Right up there with Tiger and Lebron. While a world class athlete, he certainly is not what he was, and even a football superstar today wouldn't be able to raise American Soccer to the level of the main 4 (or should I say 3+Nascar). Imagine if Rhonaldino came...it would still take a very long time. But as said before, Becks coming will send the country in the right direction.
