One thing that bothers me,and I am a Cowboys fan. Why the hell is Art Monk not getting into the Hall of Fame? Here was one of the finest receivers of all time. It makes me wonder. Why?

Here are his life stats;
Rushing ---------------- Receiving
G | Att Yards Y/A TD | Rec Yards Y/R TD

224 | 63 332 5.3 0 | 940 12,721 13.5 68

I guess the hall of fame needed a Coke machine?

I agree Art Monk should be in.

I agree they both should be in. The word I've heard (hey i'm a poet ) on Monk at least is he was played a long time, racked up a lot of numbers but was never a spectacular player. You see this happen in MLB a lot as well, guys with big numbers because they played a lot, but never really were "we gotta game plan for them" kind of guys. Fundamental differences in thinking as to what makes a HOF worthy career. Curtis Martin will probably face the same thinking when he retires.

Thank you!!!! I would feel the same way if Michael Irvin didn't get in this year.
The real reason (as any skins fan knows) is that Art Monk is one of the quietest most unassuming people on earth. He is not a self-promoter, and that has hurt him in the Hall of Fame balloting.

Say wha? He held some major records for recievers when he retired. He has been given the shaft of shafts.

"Monk's most noteworthy NFL accomplishment was his record for career receptions (940), broken by Jerry Rice during the final week of 1995, Monk's last season in the league. Despite being the first to eclipse 900 receptions, as well as retiring with the single season receptions record (106) and the most consecutive games with a catch (183)"

Seasons among the league's top 10:

Receptions: 1984-1, 1985-2, 1988-9t, 1989-3t
Receiving yards: 1984-4, 1985-3, 1989-10
Receiving TDs: 1991-9t

Among the league's all-time top 50:

Receptions: 6
Receiving yards: 11
Receiving TDs: 29t
Yards from scrimmage: 26

Consecutive games with at least one reception: 2(183)

All-Rookie: 1980

3-time Pro Bowler: 1984, 1985, 1986

2-time All-Pro: 1984, 1985

Greg, as stated, am simply repeating what I heard and read, and again, personally, I think he belongs. Read what I wrote. The issue people have with him is NOT what he accomplished over a very long career, it's that he was not a spectacular player. Just looking at the stats you posted yourself:

In 16 seasons he led the league in receptions: ONCE (not very spectacular)

In 16 seasons he finished in the TOP TEN in receiving tds(didn't lead the league, just managed to finish in the top 10, ONCE, and at that barely, he finished 9th. Not very spectacular

In 16 seasons he NEVER led the league in receiving yardage, the best he managed to do was 3rd. Again, not very spectacular. I could go on and on

Compare these stats to someone like a Marvin Harrison, who already has passed Monk's stats in fewer seasons and is a lock for the Hall.

In 11 seasons Harrison has made the Pro Bowl 8 times. (compared to 3 in 16 for Monk.)

in 11 seasons Harrison has led the league in receptions 2 times, and 6 times has been in the top ten compared to 4 times in the top 10 for Monk in 16 seasons

In 11 seasons Harrison has led the league in receiving tds 1 time, has been 2nd 5 times and has 8 finishes in the top 10, compared to 1 finish in the top ten for Monk, none leading the league and the best he finished was 9th.

in 11 seasons Harrison has led the league in receiving yardage 2 times, and 7 times has finished in the top ten, compared to ZERO first place finishes for Monk and 3 times in the top 10 in 16 years for Monk.

He's already passed Monk on the all time receptions, yardage and tds list. In fact, he has almost TWICE as many tds as Monk in 5 less years of playing time.

As stated, the knock on Monk was he racked up a lot of stats over a very long career and never dominated. All of what he accomplished in 16 years has been surpassed by Harrison in only 11 years. You can't just look at statistics, you have to compare them to the other players playing the same position, the other wide receivers in Monks case. People tend to forget in both baseball and football, the Hall of Fame is supposed to be reserved for the best of the best. It's not the "Hall of really good players" There are lots of really good players. Only the very best go to the HOF. Don't shoot the messenger Greg, just stating what I heard and what the facts are.

I guess that you get in faster if you are a convicted drug offender and annoying self-promoter. Complained about this on one of the Pats boards and was told that character is not to be considered per HOF rules. Res, agree with you about Harrison but the players are to be compared with their peers at the time they were playing.

Art Monk is a stand up person as well as a HOF caliber football player. I was told that this was his last shot at getting in, I am not sure if that is true or not. I hope not.

After this he goes to the veterans committee where I think that he will have a much better chance. I am waiting for Andre Tippett to go the the veterans in a couple more years. In my opinion both Monk and Tippett belong in there.
