Considering it was cool and rainy, and he is almost 60, I think he did well. He put his own feel and spin on it.

It was exactly as I thought it would be...

Billy Joel at the piano singing a respectable version of the national anthem. He doesn't have the greatest voice, especially at this time in his career, but it was good enough.

(much better than Stevie Nicks' performance earlier in the day...damn that was awful)

It was straightforward, unadorned, and, thankfully, lacking in any/all of the bullsh!t Maria Carey-styled harmonics-from-outer-space. Unlike the last fifteen or so folks to sing the anthem at the Superbowl, he stuck to the notes of the original. How nice! Definitely screwed up a few of the higher notes, but the lack of trills and twenty-minute arpeggios was a nice change of pace. End
