NFL Draft thoughts
I was just wondering if any of you Gorillas have any thoughts on the upcoming NFL draft.
Every mock draft has the Raiders taking JaMarcus Russell. Am I the only one who see "Dante Culpeppper" everytime I look at him???? He's never going to be a good pro QB...... ![]()

Re: NFL Draft thoughts
The problem with Daunte wasn't that he wasn't a good athelete or even a good player but that he had to be in the right system with a lot of support to be sucessfull. He has been inconsistent but he also had one of the greatest statistical seasons in the history of football. I think the worm has turned with Daunte and his ego and injuries have really made him a lower tier player now but you can't say he wasn't ever a good pro. Had it not been for Manning breaking the TD record he would have been MVP.
So my problem with JaMarcus Russell isn't that he may not be a #1 overall talent is will he be able to succeed or even survive in the big sucking sound that is the Raiders right now. Put him on a team like the Chargers and let him sit and develop like Phillip Rivers and he could be very successful make him start for the Raiders next year and he is going to be more of an Akili Smith than a Daunte Culpepper.

Re: NFL Draft thoughts
all i know is that my team is continually doing the wrong damn things.
this offseason has been horrid for us here in KC. 1) why would they ship off t. green and keep d. huard? 2) now that d. carr is available, and they intend to ship off T. Green, why not scoop up Carr and start him?? duh. and why the fluck are they asking for a 2nd rounder from miami for a 37 yr old QB with a high salary? 3) why did they sign d. edward to a huge deal when he's 3-4 years past his prime? sure, he makes plays, albeit 7 yards past the line of scrimmage - now it's 2nd and 3!! 4) why not put K. Bell inside and make the defense fit the players we have?? would make sense, don't you think? we have press CBs, but now they have to play back in the cover 2. we have 3-4 style ILBs, yet they're playing OLB??? we have ZERO DTs to run a 4-3, yet we're running it. bah... here's to an early draft pick in '08, KC... may you take a GM that knows his ass from a hole in the ground.

Re: NFL Draft thoughts
In my opinion JaMarcus is a great physical talent, well I think he is all physical talent. At LSU, he made some big plays that won games, he did this because of his size and strength. He also made some pretty bonehead plays , IMHO he needs to be in a system that will help him develop and learn to make smart decisions, where that is I don't know. He developed alot this last year, but it is a big step he is about to taking.

Re: NFL Draft thoughts
brady quinn is my man. the raider won't but should take him in the first round. did you see how many bench reps he did at the combine? that was insane. apparently he's got great football iq and incredible drive and work ethic that's obvious from how hard he worked from the end of the season to the combine. really though, i just hope my 'boys take somebody good and don't through away any pics.

Re: NFL Draft thoughts
Drafting a QB is always a crap shoot. For every one that becomes an NFL star, how many fail? JaMarcus is a great talent - but can he run an NFL offense? If he is drafted by Oakland, will he immediately be thrown to the wolves as their starter? That'll test his meddle. It will be interesting.

Re: NFL Draft thoughts
I don't know much about Russell, but I do know this:
1) Jeff George was a great physical talent 2) RoboQB (can't remember his name right now, which I guess says something, who I believe was also drafted by the Raiders and faded into obscurity) was a great physical talent. 3) Michael Vick (who i personally think sucks and has yet to show me he can be an NFL QB) is a great physical talent (allegedly). it takes a lot more than being a great physical talent to make it in the NFL. just my ![]() |

Re: NFL Draft thoughts
I think the Raiders should take Russell. He is a young QB and I think he will learn.
Say what you want about football IQ, but I saw that thrown at Alex Smith. Highest wonderlic test score his draft year. Still, my 49ers aren't at peak efficiency. So I think with the new coach PLUS Russell's physical skills; the Raiders need to pick him. I don't think Calvin Johnson should be drafted at the #1. I don't know of any great team that has been based around the WR. Put a shutdown corner on him and your $50 million investment gets 2 receptions for 18 yards. Yet again... who knows what will happen right??

Re: NFL Draft thoughts
The Packers need to get a top RB. A. Green is gone and either Peterson or Lynch could fit the bill. I felt they should have pulled a RB last year so he could build the expereince without having to be the man, but a top player who can step right it will make the difference.

Re: NFL Draft thoughts
I agree on both parts - they absolutely have to take him and then cross their fingers and toes!

Re: NFL Draft thoughts
It's anybody's guess as to who will be the better QB in five years, Russel or Quinn. However, if I had to put my money on it, I would bet that Russel could have a bigger impact immediately. Now I don't think he's taking them to the playoffs- but much like Vince and the Titans, he has more big play potential than Quinn. IMO that alone gives the Raiders a chance to be a 7 maybe 8 win team his rookie year.

Re: NFL Draft thoughts
Remember back a few years when there was a debate over Peyton Manning and Ryan Leaf or how about the Drew Bledson / Rick Mirer debate. Ahh memories.

Re: NFL Draft thoughts
Russell is the man. He's proven himself in the toughest football conferance and in the big games that count. Quinn would be a bit of a gamble b/c although he looks good when playing against throw away teams, he royally sucked and got his rear end handed to him in the games against good teams, the ones that counted.
