He was on the way to being a legitimate star receiver and he deserved it. One of the nicest men that I have ever met, both before and after his injury. He forgave Tatum, wonder if I could have done that if places were reversed. Rest in peace, Darryl.

They never met after the hit though. A meeting was set at some point at a halftime or pre game, but Stingley cancelled when it was learned Tatum was just doing it to promtote his new book.

That is true, in fact Tatum did not directly speak with Stingley in arranging the meeting, an associate did. However, I stand by my statement about forgiveness because he said it on national tv and on Boston area radio and tv. One very interesting thing was that John Madden was a huge help to Stingley while he was in the hospital.

Re: Darryl Stingley, paralyzed by Tatum hit, dies at 55

Football is such a violent sport, yet we (everyone I know) lives and breaths it. We look forward to each and every year. I think it's the gamesmanship, more than anything...the feeling in the air, when the weather turns to fall and we all look to the pigskin for enjoyment.
As my son turns older and his love for the game develops, I know there is always that chance and that plays with my head at times.
But I know the experience and self-esteems a young man develops from playing football far exceeds the risks. I don't think any parent would willingly put his or her child at risk, but we all do things in our lives that our risky. That's what makes life worth living. The End.

I remember the play. RIP Mr. Stingley.

And if you never seen the play here it is August 12, 1978
