Robbie McEwen had what was probably his best win ever in the tour today. Involved in a crash w/ circa 20 km to go he still managed to get back to the peloton and came out of absolutely freaking nowhere to take both the stage and the green jersey. Hope his wrist is OK - looks pretty painful.

I heart Robbie!

That was an impressive win. To be caught off the back so late, catch the peleton injured and win the stage was just awsome!!!

And I want to pick Tom Boonen to with tomorrow. He will go all out to win in Belgium. And he gets very excited when he wins:

He looks pretty excited in that pic. Is that a gun in his pocket or is he just happy to have won??

Re: Tour de France Contest

First stage was awesome. Unbelievable ride by McEwen. Think he's got anything left in the tank for today?

I think the camera work was a little suspect at the end of the race. Maybe intentionally. We all were under the impression McEwen was still at the back of the peleton until he crossed the finish line in first.

It is tough to cover a single rider going through the peleton like that. You can get him making the catch, but unless you had the helicopter on him, it would be impossible to see him work his way through.

McEwan has a habit of coming out of nowhere.
Great race today marred by a massive pile up @ around the 2K to go mark.
Several of the riders involved looked pretty banged up. Hope no one was hurt too badly and that all will be able to start tomorrow.

Boonen could not get around his lead up man today. That was a pretty nasty crash at the end of the stage today.

Ok, lets try this again:

Name tomorrows stage winner.

The first person who posts a rider gets that rider. Any others who choose him have wasted a selection. You get one selection. That is all. This is worth one point.

Re: Tour de France Contest

Pretty good stage yesterday. Too bad for the crash at the end. I think the finish would have been a little more exiting if the crash hadn't occurred. The road was also very narrow making it a little dicey. It looked as though Robby McEwen was boxed in at the end and even Boner had a hard time getting around his lead off man. (or so the anouncers led us to believe). I don't really think it was very smart of Steegmans to take the sprint and I think it ruins Boonen's shot at winning the green jersey. The announcers were watching the camera angle that showed the racers head on at the finish so it looked as though there was no room for Boonen to get around Steegmans, but the overhead shot shows a different story. Steegmans and Boonen were well ahead of the rest of the pack and Steegmans should have let off and let Boonen take the stage.

Unless the team has suddenly decided that Boonen is now the lead off man?

That stuff happens. If it comes down to a couple of points in Paris it could prove costly. But Boonen's job is to come around and he probably underestimated the little hill at the end. He did not look too upset about it. I think the main thing he needs to do is stay ahead of McEwen if he wants to stay in green.
