I could have quoted the whole thing, as it was a really well done post, but this is what strikes me. In the ratings driven media world, there isn't room for a role model. There are still some guys in baseball who are outstanding athletes, decent human beings, and get zero media coverage. That is because they aren't out there fighting pit bulls, taking steroids, making a "look at me" scene when they do something great, going home and beating there wives, philandering while on the road, etc. etc. They just go out there on and collect their 2-4 with 2 RBI and a run scored, play solid defense, then go home and hug their wife and kids. No room for that in today's society.

The idols are out there in baseball, but for one reason or another (be it they are humble, shy, or unable to speak english) we don't see them in any stories. But for my money, a stellar athlete who does the right things on the field, in the clubhouse, and away from the yard is more newsworthy than the other kind.

Anyways, Bonds? Couldn't care less about him. I think he will break the record, but I would love to see pujols double him up in career homers.

I cannot stand Bond's attitude toward baseball fans. It is only fair that fans take the same stance toward him pursuing the HR record.

That would be great....especially if Albert comes to the Tigers or Cubs as a free-agent.

*shudders*

Prior to the strike of 1994, i could name (almost) every starting lineup in baseball, names/positions/numbers/etc. Since then I have lost alot of love for the game. I watched more baseball in the year prior to the strike, than I have in all the years since.

I am torn on Bonds hitting 756. For the sake of watching history unfold in front of your eyes, I'm all for it... But please, anyone but Bonds

Re: Bonds breaking the record...

Im 19 and Barry is by far the best hitter I have ever witnessed. It is absolutely amazing, roids or not, to hit 73 dingers in a year with so few pitches to hit... phenomenal.

Re: Bonds breaking the record...

SOAP BOX MODE - ON

I subtract at least 100 homers from Bonds career. That is the minimum number he hit while using performance enhancing drugs.

Hank did it the hard way.
A number of my friends tell me it's not a big deal. I say . It IS a big deal. The home run record has always been the most loved and coveted record of of fans and players for a hundred years. It is and always has been Baseballs' "Holy Grail".

Screw Bonds and his record.

SOAP BOX MODE - OFF (until someone brings this up again)

Baseball
Cigars
Sex
Jack Daniels

In that order, but I'm really not sure about the sex and Jack. Could go either way. I sure get more Jack than sex though.

I'm just glad that A-Rod should break it with ease (and at least as of now, A-Rod has a clean background...)
