Re: Bonds breaking the record...
I agree that Babe Ruth is the best ever.
![]() Barry's carreer BA is only .298, which is well below a ton of players. Barry got all the steals before he gained an obscene amount of muscle from obvious steroids. Also, putting him w/ the best players ever is hard, given that fact that most of the others in that category were great leaders, and he's the antithesis of leadership. Leadership is very important in a player that has the potential to carry a team if you want to win games. Needless to say, he took roids and got huge and hit a bunch of homeruns. If it weren't for that, he'd be considered one of the great all time, but not even in the realm that he is now and there would be no debate about whether he is or isn't. Regardless, I think it's a disgrace to see someone that everyone knows took steroids and who is a complete jerk break such a coveted record in baseball. Maybe I'm a little traditional, but it's America's game and people like him tarnish its greatness. The fans speak though, so although he has the record, he doesn't have the respect of a vast majority of the fans, given the scenes from the Giants' away games. A-Rod and Pujols will break it though, eventually, so I'll wait. |

I'm just glad he hit it when he did - I won the guess the date contest!
![]() I have to say I'm glad this circus is over...I believe he cheated, I think he is a crappy human being, and I hope he retires at the end of this season. Just my for whatever it's worth.

From Neal Boortz web site: PITY THE FOOL The fool I'm referring to here is the poor sap from New York who caught that Barry Bonds home run ball in San Francisco earlier this week. The ball is reputed to be worth in the neighborhood of a half-million dollars. Here's the rub. Accountants certainly aren't in agreement on this, but some are saying that this character owes the IRS about $200,000. Think about it. If someone gives you a car worth $500,000, you must include that car as income on your tax return. The extra income shoves you into a higher bracket, and you're going to fork over at least $200,000. Well, what's the big difference between someone giving you a half-million dollar car and a half-million dollar baseball? New York tax lawyer John Barrie says: "It's an expensive catch. Once he took possession of the ball and it was his ball, it was income to him based on its value as of yesterday." Some tax experts say that no, you don't have to pay the tax until you actually sell the ball. Sell, that's not the way it would work for the car, so why would the government treat that ball any differently? Isn't this just grand? Our wonderful tax system at work. Does anyone out there have any suggestions as to how we might change things?

Re: Bonds breaking the record...
In regards to people saying he owes the IRS $200,000... the ball is worth $5. Its a leather baseball. Whatever someone decides to pay him for it would be taxable income, but it doesn't mean that its not a $5 baseball all the same.

Re: Bonds breaking the record...
They're only worth what someone is willing to pay for them - so if you bought a pack of cards and got a Nolan Ryan/Tom Seaver rookie card, until you sell it to someone you owe nothing.

Re: Bonds breaking the record...
Congrats Barry. Even if he did use steroids, you do have to give him some credit, Look at his numbers, Look at how many less at bats he had than Aaron, how many more walks, even a machine would have a hard time hitting this many home runs with that few at bats and so many walks!
