First, uninstall Vista... That is a very strange problem, but try this. Reboot is safe made, try holding down F8 when your restart, then once in safe mode, reboot again. This tends to fix strange things.

Have you checked any BIOS settings that have to do with
startup/shutdown/power management?

Generally, PnP OS should be set to NO. It is counterintuitive but it is a
setting for older OS's. Also, what is the response from running
powercfg -a from the command prompt. Maybe you will get some clue from
the return. If you still have a problem you might want to run powercfg /?
and look down thru the options You can run some of the options that look
related to your problem.

Just as in WinXP goto Control Panel>System>Advanced Settings> on the
advanced tab click the startup and recovery button and uncheck the
"Automatically Restart" box.

Next time you shut down instead of re-starting you will get the BSOD that
will tell you which driver or piece of hardware that is causing the improper
shutdown.

Let me know if this helps.

Re: computer help

Usually, problems with shutdown/restart/hibernate/sleep are caused by bad device drivers. Vista is notorious for driver compatibility problems.

Go the the manufacturer site and look for driver updates and BIOS updates.

I think his dad would notice if he switched the OS. He said he didn't want him to know he's using his computer.

How computer savvy is your dad? Would he look at the history in the browser to see what you've been up to? Would he notice if you erased the history? Is autofill activated in the address bar? When he types the letter C will he see a list of cigars web sites to choose from?

Next time, set up a new user and use that account for surfing. It will keep each users history separate from one other. Just delete the new user account before he gets home.
