yeah, bittorrent is the only way to go. I have been able to find almost anything that has been released on CD (some of the stuff I want has been out of print since 92 or earlier).

You use Packetnews.com to search, then click and it pops up the mIRC client for you which you can download for free. Then all you have to do is hit ctrl+v to paste in the message section and it automatically starts downloading for you or puts you in line. Works well for full albums. Limewire's still pretty good if you get the pay version without paying for it (only downside- fewer people are using it these days = less music) from sites like projectw.org. Incomplete songs can be avoided pretty easily, just look at the file size of a song and make sure it looks right.. don't download if it's like 35k or something stupid like that, and look to see if there's several files of the same size or higher. If there are then you're pretty much guaranteed it's right. For over 20 gigs of music these 2 options have worked just fine for me.

One other thing, forums are a great way to find music. Projectw.org mentioned above is also a great place to post up and share your music as well as find others who have done so by putting it on rapidshare or other download services. A good, sure-fire way to dl music.... or anything else (music, apps, movies etc)

Squid® used to get a lot of music from UseNET News Groups. XNews was my app of choice, and I could program it to do exactly what I wanted quite easily. Recently AT&T (my INet provider) stopped carrying any of the alt.binaries.etc newsgroups stating there may possibly be pr0n there... (As if it isn't everywhere on the internet already) I don't want to pay for another news service so I have to settle for torrents... Still read alt.smokers.cigars every once in a while though... < G >

FYI indeed the free version does. The version you have to buy has no spyware/adware, unlike the free one that's slam full of it. That's why it's best to download the 'premium' pay version for free. Oh and if you're moronic enough to download a file that's like 55k but claims it's a song/movie/app that should obviously be larger. One of the worst wraps p2p ever got- that you automatically get viruses by using it or it's hard not to get them.

I've been using SoulSeek for years. Never spyware/adware and you can choose who you share your music with. So if you just wanted to share with your friends, you could set it up so they are the only ones that can download from your pc.
