Almost Alienware now!

Tonight I DOUBLED the memory of my laptop. I am now at a heart thumping 512Mb! Whoo hooo! That also happens to be the maximum this ancient laptop will use. It does seem to work a little better. I found the memory on eBay for $0.99 plus $5 in shipping. So, it was probably worth the $6.00 price tag. Hard to believe you can run XP on 256 mb, but I did it for five years.

I just had a tech support dude scold me on the phone last week for only having 512 RAM. I feel your pain! Ha ha.

My laptop sounds to be about the same "vintage". I'm trying to remember if I got it in '00 or '01. I have 512 MB RAM as well but unfortunately I upgraded the RAM shortly after buying it, so it cost considerably more than $0.99. I have absolutely no problem doing just about everything I want with the old dog.

Only problem is that the right inch or so of my screen doesn't work (not sure if its the screen or video card). But its always my companion when I'm outside having a smoke and surfing CL.

If you really want to give an old laptop a shot in the arm, upgrade to a new hard drive. The HD is always the bottleneck of any computer.

I just bought a desktop last year and already there are games that i cant even play unless its on super low resolution. ah well, i guess ill just save my $ for some more cigars!

oh, and did you know that alienware got bought up by Dell? i think if i ever get another pc, i will end up building it myself. this bit with Dell and all their proprietary parts where you can use standard cases and power supplies is crap.
