Folding At Home - New Team Creation

Guys I wanted to bring your attention to something that I have gotten into recently. With the power of the PC organizations have been able to use our CPU power to assist in calculations needed for disease understandings. You may recall SETI which was the E.T. program for radio signals from outer space. Very popular but many don't feel it's really a contribution. Below is folding at home. Being cigar smokers and all the bad press we get I figured who else to contribute. On a team currently with 150,000 points but going to leave if we can gather enough interest to field our own team. I'd prefer to keep this BB free and open to all cigar smokers. To make the biggest noise the aggregate score speaks the loudest. Multiple teams of cigar smokers we won't stand out immediately but the project is important enough that I wouldn't argue anyone from doing that. We all chat cigars so lets populate team CigarChat and start folding.

What is protein folding and how is folding linked to disease?
Proteins are biology's workhorses -- its "nanomachines." Before proteins can carry out these important functions, they assemble themselves, or "fold." The process of protein folding, while critical and fundamental to virtually all of biology, in many ways remains a mystery.

Moreover, when proteins do not fold correctly (i.e. "misfold"), there can be serious consequences, including many well known diseases, such as Alzheimer's, Mad Cow (BSE), CJD, ALS, Huntington's, Parkinson's disease, and many Cancers and cancer-related syndromes.

You can help by simply running a piece of software.
Folding@home is a distributed computing project -- people from throughout the world download and run software to band together to make one of the largest supercomputers in the world. Every computer takes the project closer to our goals. Folding@home uses novel computational methods coupled to distributed computing, to simulate problems millions of times more challenging than previously achieved.

Interesting Shane. I am already a member of a team on both Seti@home and Rosetta@home (another protein research project). May not have any other comp cycles left to donate currently... but let me think about it! Great idea, nonetheless

Great to hear. And sorry about the dig (kinda) on SETI. At the time groundbreaking but it seems that most want to focus on applications closer to home.

So even if you have other projects don't fret. All are worthwhile. If not I'd ask you check out any of the @home projects that may interest you.

While I have my desktop at home running it is folding away for extremeoverclockingforum.net. But that machine is less than useless for that purpose as the uptime is less than a couple of hours in a month.

It is a great project and I encourage any who keeps their computers running for any length time to contribute!
