Macs are overpriced IMO. I do liek the OS though.

Ive been running Win7 for quite some time now. Its a good OS. I never had a problem with Vista but 7 is much much better.

Re: Windows 7 RC

I went Win7 full time about six weeks ago. Assuming you have an appropriately power system (1gb or more of ram, p4 or better cpu....) and you can manage to not install every piece of garbage software you find, you'll be happy with it. It is not quite as intrusive as Vista for someone who knows what they are doing. The only thing that would not work (on the 64 bit version) was Google Chrome, but 3.0 came out last week and works like a charm. There were a few driver issues, but the Vista 64 driver handled them just fine. It is a true upgrade to XP. I would absolutely recommend it.

Not a one. With the new beta of Chrome, everything that runs on Vista 64 works fine.

Re: Windows 7 RC

I'm sticking with XP Pro until the bitter, bitter, end. And I know many pro's are doing the same. I don't care what bells and whistles 7 has. My computer runs well and never crashes. It's finely tuned. I can run at least four major apps and tons of minor ones on a laptop without a(n) hiccup, and with a small LAN for storage. And every 2-3 days I'll run CCleaner and reboot. No problemo.

It's just the name of the game for Microsoft, IMO. Having dumped Vista after about a year, I have no regrets going "back" to XP. IF it were the Mac OS or Ubuntu Linux, I would have almost no qualms about updating.

And, by the time Microsoft has us all hedged out of XP (and they will), 7 will be up to at least Service Pack 3.

Re: Windows 7 RC

I can understand wanting to stick w/ XP, but I personally like Vista and never had any problems with it...

From what I read about Windows 7 is that it is a smaller OS in size vs. Vista for speed and performance. Any truth to that? I believe it is based on Server 2008.

The only thing I am not looking forward to is backing up my files and having to reinstall them on a new OS...

Re: Windows 7 RC

7 is based on Vista. Maybe it's a leaner, meaner Vista? Hopefully haha. I think the criteria for updating should be, "will my important apps work with 7 and what am I ("we" if you're a business) gaining from migrating?"

The answer for me is "I don't know and nothing." YMMV.

You really should already have backups of your important stuff, btw.

Re: Windows 7 RC

It takes the look of Vista and makes it less of a resource whore. If you are happy with Vista (and if you are you are either REALLY stupid and don't know better or are smart enough to configure all of the super intrusiveness, its a word, out of it) then you should probably not sweat it. Microsoft will continue to support for another good five years. If you are on XP, its time. The official death was in April.

BTW, if you are a business, you should never ever never ever never ever adopt an OS within 6 months of launch. Ever. Seriously.

I will agree with you in part regarding the invasive aspects of Vista, but I wouldn't goes as far to say that individuals who are satisified with Vista are stupid...

I could only agree with that statement if it was in regards to Millenium...

Personally, I am partial to Linux for computing and running a "tight ship" but for most people who buy a PC that's pre-loaded with Vista is fine IMO. I tweaked it out, use it everyday, and would recommend it...

Just like tastes in cigars my friend, we all have different palates...

With a fairly high end system, Vista is alright. Most people do not have high end systems. Brand new system out of the box with a gb of RAM, Vista drags. Perhaps the word uninformed might be a little better. Linux is getting there. I do phone tech support (among other things) for a company that sells security/surveillance equipment. Mainly I help folks set up their routers to access their DVRs remotely. 9/10 I talk to are not ready for Linux. Goodness, their Vista machines often have somewhere north of 95 running processes and they complain that "Vista is slowing down their brand new computer." When in reality, they don't know not to install every program they have ever seen. Word to the wise, a wireless laptop with 1gb of ram and 115 running processes runs SLOW on a remote connection.

For someone like yourself, that knows not to do that, to install more RAM, and how to tweak out your system, Vista is ok. But 7 is still better.

I thought we all agreed NEVER to speak of Millenium again?

Absolutely, especially when new machines are pre-loaded what seems to be millions of useless & wasteful programs like trial software, game offers, adware, AOL, you name it.... Most average Joe's keep it and let in run in their start-up.

I am definetly looking forward to trying out 7!!! I was checking out the MS site and I'm impressed with it!!! I am curious as to the actual size of the OS 3-5 gb's? As you stated, and I have heard, it is less of a resource junkie, so that's very cool too!
