Twitter question

I just started twittering (tweeting?) recently and noticed that I don't get notices of any messages.

I've checked all my settings to make sure I've got notifications turned on:
X New Follower Emails: Email when someone starts following me
X Direct Text Emails: Email when I receive a new direct message
X Email Newsletter: I want the inside scoop—please send me email updates!

If someone sends an @ message to you or replies to you, aren't you supposed to get a notification by email? I do get the messages when I get a new follower though.

Best of my knowledge you do NOT as the serial twatterrers would have hundreds, if not thousands of emails per day.
