Re: Favorite OS
If I had my druthers, I'd use Windows 98 SE with the latest APIs. I want most of my resources dedicated to running applications that I install, not that the operating system developer sees fit to cram in there. Of course, that's never going to happen so out of the current bloatware selections, I'd go with Windows 7.
I decided to install Windows 7 on my main PC at work so I could figure out its idiosyncrasies before it goes into widespread deployment throughout the company. I actually like the new taskbar a whole bunch now that I've gotten used to it. The high level of customization of the system tray is very nice, although Microsoft really screwed the pooch when it came to customizing anything else that didn't have to do with making crap that should rarely ever be seen behind application windows all sorts of shiny. The new Start menu plain sucks, except for the fact that when hitting the Windows key on the keyboard that it defaults to the new search box, which works just fine for opening basic apps like Notepad and Paint as well as MMC consoles. The document libraries I could care less about since I keep my docs organized anyhow, but I can see that being useful for a lot of people. The way that it separates the audio control for each application kicks mucho ass as well. PowerShell integration is sweet, particularly with that decent ISE that they included with it. I like me some VBScript but getting a decent IDE/debugger is costly since Microsoft couldn't be troubled to provide one outside of the one for VBA within Office. I'm looking forward to see how Homegroup works at home because having to constant beat my wife's Vista laptop into submission every time I want to do something network related completely SUCKS, like everything else about Vista. Just haven't played with Homegroup yet since everything at work is either on the regular company domain or on one of our team's test domains. Even without that, I will be so happy to get Vista off of her laptop, since I couldn't pull XP drivers together to kill it, and oh how I tried. That upgrade alone will give me hours of troubleshooting time back. While I'm not pleased with how monolithic and lacking in overall customization options Windows 7 is, it's a damned sight better than I had expected so I'm looking forward to upgrading my home computers as well. While I enjoy using Linux, it just ain't fit for many of my purposes so I only use it on my servers and on my personal secondary PC. Apple and Mac OS X can go choke on a sweaty ****; I've had the misfortune of doing a lot of the Mac testing in our lab and the more I deal with it, the more I hate it. The only good thing I can say about it is that it's nice to be able to use Bash scripts, although they bastardized enough of the BSD commands to induce rage on a regular basis trying to use them. |

Re: Favorite OS
I've been enjoying Windows Vista,XP, and Win7 RC quite awhile. If I had to choose, I'd probably choose Win7 as it is pretty awesome.

Re: Favorite OS
I've been a major Windows XP fan for years and still am (I'm an IT Technician for a living). But Windows has always been weak with security, and these days there's so much malware and viruses floating around the net. I'm an expert at removing malware/viruses but it gets tiring and they are getting even more complex and damaging so I installed Ubuntu on my home PC and my wife's PC as dual boot systems. I've used Linux a lot in the past so I am very familiar with it.
I gotta say, I'm absolutely loving Ubuntu! I'm posting while on it right now. I have nearly everything on it that my Windows machine has and it's all free. Gimp photo editing, DVD ripping (for my MP3 player), instant messaging, music player, Google Earth, etc etc... all right there. Now, I still use Windows XP for my DAW (digital audio workstation for writing music) because the software I use isn't available on Linux, as is the case with a lot of software. But for all my normal usage I'm sticking with Linux. Rev. |

Re: Favorite OS
window vista sucks worse than windows me. I have a HP lap top and it will not load service pack one. It turned out that HP and Vista had problems across the board - so it was not just me. I will try and up grade to windows 7 if I can. Vista is crap.
I am tempted to get a Mac - and to hell with microsoft |
