Any Linux Gurus Out There?
I just made the switch on one of my PC's at home to see if I can get away from Windows. I tried doing a Hackintosh but there wasn't any clear cut info out there because its illegal. I installed Ubuntu 9.04 with the KDE (Kubuntu) and so far I am happy with it. It is almost Windows like. I still have to get stronger at the Linux thing and have bought a book to do so.

Re: Any Linux Gurus Out There?
What are you trying to accomplish? Just general know how with KDE and the GUI? Or become a LINUX guru yourself? One tricky aspect with linux is learning how all the different subsystems work and how they are layered on top of one another. I would suggest deciding on one aspect to familiarize yourself with and go from there. For instance, SECURITY. On that topic alone you could spent three months reading and trying things out. And then a few years becoming a guru

A little bit of everything. It almost like I am picking up another hobby. The intent of the thread was a conversation striker for anyone who knows Linux.

Re: Any Linux Gurus Out There?
I have been fighting with Linux for awhile. Run a laptop and a desktop dual boot with Windows and Ubuntu. I've also tried Red Hat, Mepis, Suse, and Madriva, but prefer Ubuntu with the Gnome desktop.
Linux is much faster than XP pro on my older P4 desktop and is very stable. The Thinkpad is also faster than Vista, but, always seems to develop problems with wireless connectivity when I run the auto updates. Still haven't figured it out. In general I've had a lot of hardware issues in the past, but the newer versions of Ubuntu seem to be more hardware friendly. Windows still dominates video on a lot of websites. Spyware and viruses seem to be nonexistent. I'd like to use it more, but just can't seem to get over the hump.
