    Frack Nvidia and HP

Just had to get that out. My laptop has now twice succumbed to the nvidia chip failure. Pink snow screen... yeah! Hopefully, I can save it once more with duct tape.

Never experienced it, never heard of it, and Nvidia does me no wrong.

The Nvidia defect is pretty well known. HP, Dell and Apple had several models manufactured with faulty gpu. Lead content of soldering was too high causing overheat/failure. HP wanted me to pay to have a new mb installed... With same defective gpu. Awesome.

    From an nvidia media release.
Nvidia said "weak die/packaging material set in certain versions"

I worked for a OEM warranty repair agent for two years. Had lots of people come in with issues they claimed were known documented failures, never had one right though. Funnily enough no one who did have a known failure ever cam ein knowing or at least stating it was a known fault.

Mainboards for all different brands are often made by the same manufacturer, so sounds more like a manufacture then a chipset fault. Why I prefer PCs over laptops, PC dies I can choose and install the MB I want rather then being stuck with a chassis specific OEM board.

How did you fix it with duct tape??

I was wondering that myself Andrew. Duct tape does not have very good heat transfer properties.

Duct tape can do anything, I've seen it on Mythbusters haha. Sorry to the OP for the thread jack. I'm genuinely curious how you did it.

Do you game Justin? Just wondering, why are you the lucky one who keeps blowing out gpus.. I've owned 5 Macs, 2 macBooks, and 1 pc laptop (Gateway) and all of them still work properly with originally installed parts. Duct tape should work.

The duct tape was tongue in cheek.

It was fixed the first time by a shop in New York. Most of the issues in HP were in the dv series and they (hp) did a recall but never up to the dv9000 models.

I was searching stuff on eBay and found the shop offering the service for much much less than the $400 hp mb replacement. Worked great for the past 2(ish) years.

I hear ya on the pc vs laptop, but after dropping that much coin for a product that lasted two years... I was willing to risk the fix. Hoping they can fix it again...

No gaming for me anymore... Once the gpu blew out the first time, two years or so, I sent it for the fix. They resoldered and set the fan to run 100% of the time the comp was on. I think between vids for my son, wife doing school projects and vherf sessions, it finally gave out.

I would be outraged and raising some hell if I had a 2 year old HP that was going thru parts. They charge like they're extremely proud of their products. Have you made multiple attempts to make HP cust. service hate you enough to shut you up?

edit: I see you mentioned intensive video processing.. oh. On a chip that overheats easily you are screwed huh!

Fact of the matter is IT parts are made cheap because people want cheap computers. My advice is always get extended warranty to three years, that way you're covered and after three years you probably wanna upgrade anyway.
