Duane, I was sad to read this brother. You are a great man and need to stay strong for your family. Prayers goes out to your Dad....no one should suffer like that and unfortunately, many good people do at the end. I have seen it with my grandfather, grandmother and my father-in-law. All didn't deserve the final hand they were dealt. Please contact me if you need anything.

Thanks everyone for your kind words and prayers.

He was admitted to the hospital on Wednesday and he was initially seeking full care and full code status. The doctor was quite blunt about his condition and laid it out that he probably has a week to live at the most. A palliative care nurse that has seen him on a few previous visits just noticed a considerable difference in his physical condition with the tumor/blockage causing his belly to swell 4-5 times its normal size and he did finally say something about everyone has to die sometime and made reference to him just being too tired anymore. He advised her that he would leave it up to my brother and I about how to proceed.

His cancer doctor visited him this morning and she got the ok from him to put him on a no code status. She asked him if he was in any pain and he said no, but she advised the nurse to start him on small morphine drip because she knows he’s in pain. He’s pretty much sleeping the whole time now compared to the discomfort he was obviously experiencing before. The palliative care nurse said it appears as though the circulation in his limbs is slowing down as the final stages of the body just shutting down.

My dad never complained of pain(but he did complain about 6 years worth of diarrhea which I’m sure would drive a lot people to commit suicide). He endured 4 years of chemo treatments throughout the past 6 years and up until this fall, you would have never thought he was a cancer patient. He was referred to a “walking miracle” by the nurses at the cancer clinic. He lived more than 2 years longer than the average cancer patient would have survived after a recurrence. He fought long enough to see the birth of his grandson named after him. You put up one hell of a fight dad. I love you and will miss you more than you’ll ever know.

I am so sorry to hear about your loss. I am not ready for that day. I hate that it even has to come.

I had no idea when we talked today about your dad's situation...And for that I am so sorry.

My addy is in my profile if that's what you mean. The entire CL community has been great.

My boss has been great as well. I've gone in to work in the mornings to work on the hot stuff and he keeps getting on my case to get out of there. They sent a basket to the house today with fruit and stuff. In all my previous jobs, they would be making me take vacation, so it's nice to have that kind of support at work as well. My house church group has been a big support group as well for anything along the way as well.
